Canon certainly didn’t shaft stills shooters, practically everything in this update is for stills shooters other than the bug fix for Canon Log.
Oh goodie, a handful of marginally useful tweaks. Where are the zebras, variable fps in ES, …

fw withdrawn. CFE "card error" issue as commented in dPreview. Based on imgs, looks like it happens when formatting the card in camera. I updated mine yesterday, but didnt format the card. I hope it works fine if i do not format the cfe card.

I don't know. Mine seems to be workings just fine. I was just going to ask if anyone noticed anything any issues. Seems like a few trolls invaded another site.

It's starting to run amok there. People with only a few posts coming in saying the sky is falling.

I don't yet have an R5 and so have no vested interest. I will say that it has always been my practice to wait a couple of weeks after new firmware has been released and read people's feedback about the release in case there are any bugs to be worked out. I do the same with major Windows updates. Just sayin'.

That’s a good practise but many can hardly wait. I’ve seen people from NA go to Canon Asia to get it 12 hrs earlier.

The DPreview forum thread ended with a Twitter link for a tweet with a reply from Canon UK saying it was a website glitch causing firmware not to be available for many products.

Yes and eventually blown out of proportion after the 1st post. Last places I trust for any accuracy is Twitter or Meta.

Shot a women's college hockey game last night, no issues. First time out with the camera. One of the updates in 1.5 was to improve face detection when helmets were being worn. The camera immediately locked on to faces, with both cages and face shields. Since I didn't try 1.4, I don't if this is much better or not.

Am giving it a go today. Will report back…
Initial field impressions - limited application of two lenses (100-500, 500 f/4 IS II with 1.4x TC) birds, BIF, vehicles:
1) Overall the AF seems a bit "snappier" and more active in good light. For example when aimed at bobbing ducks it more rapidly acquired initial eye focus, snapped to the body when the duck dived, and quickly returned to the eye when the duck surfaced. BIF, quicker to acquire the subject against a blue sky. Was unable to test it on launches.
2) Seemed more "sure" or "sticky" once the eye was acquired (no case/setting change)
3) Vehicle AF is cool. Prior to this, the AF generally would capture the plate or closest contrasty surface. Can now customize and will have to take it to the track to experiment further.
Many unknowns though it appears that the changes are appearing favorable, so far. Still need my zebras, variable FPS in ES, and greater button programmability, but hey.

Just installed and gave it a quick test drive. All seems well and no fire trucks were called to my house.
It's been a week since I picked up my camera but I swear the AEAF point is much smaller and moves at a much finer/smaller interval. And it's definitely more sticky. I swung the camera back and forth while keeping the subject eye in the frame and it would not let go no matter how fast a moved the camera back and forth and snapped immediately back on if it left the frame.
The new custom white balance feature is very nice! I made the mistake the first try by using a sheet of paper and couldn't figure out why it set the WB too warm. Then I grabbed my CCP and used the gray card to set it and it nailed it. I like how it only used the very center AF box looking thing so your target only needs to cover that small point rather than the entire frame.
Looking forward to getting it out there in good light on real subjects!

Upgraded my R6 to 1.5 yesterday. No issues to report. I wanted to try out Vehicle AF and out of curiosity I turned on an F1 race on television and pointed the R6 and a 70-200 at the tv. It's not scientific but the R6 would immediately pick up the F1 car and put a rectangular box on the car and track it across the frame. I did this for a while and the camera would pick up the car even when it was small in the corner of the frame.
