I'm a sucker for sunset silhouettes, but managed to get in a few sunrise silhouettes as well this year. And then I sometimes do them in the studio as well. Some are complete silhouettes, others, i let in a little light to show some form, a foot, and/or face.
It's funny, but a number of these are from a workshop I ran in Chicago for dance photographers. If anyone's interested our Pas de Deux Photo is hosting it's second dance photography conference, this time in Austin on Feb. 24-27. Lois Greenfield is our keynote speaker. 1. This came at the end of a recital portrait session. The dance studio owner wanted something special for marketing, so we came up with this in my studio. Background is lit, and I feathered some light into the dancer's face/front.

2. This is Lydia McRae of the Nashville Ballet, her final photo shoot as she was retiring as a professional dancer. I started as a straight silhouette, but wanted to have some light on her face, and then the muscles in her legs. A lot of dancers have serious muscle definition these days, and they totally embrace it now. 30-40 years ago, not so much.

3. This is the first one from my Chicago workshop when we were at a park I frequent.

4. The second day of our workshop, we spent part of it in the studio and I did a demo on how I do studio silhouettes. This is what I came up for them.

5. The third day of the workshop, I took them down to the Adler Planetarium in Chicago, where Lake Michigan faces east. We were lucky and had a gorgeous sunrise.

7. This is Anne O'Donnell, a soloist with Martha Graham. I wanted to play with the fabric and see how it looked as a part of a silhouette. Anne was amazing. I originally did this as a straight silhouette, then Anne asked me to highlight her lower leg. Love how that turned out.

8. This is from a senior session, on the exact same spot as No. 3, but a few months later so the sun had moved farther south on the horizon.

Thanks! I always like knowing which are people's faves. I like the outdoor ones bc being here in Chicago I don't get too many sunsets and then there's rarely a place high enough to capture it -- so when I get one, it's pretty fun!
