As a birder I rely on the 200-600 + 2xTC pretty well all the time, so shooting 600mm-1200mm renders IBIS pretty well useless regardless of what brand I use. In fact, shooting such long focal lengths requires a pretty darned beefy tripod, which in my case is a Sachtler Flowtech 100 and Cartoni Focus 12 head, and even that isn't very stable in any sort of wind at those focal lengths.

Gary,

I looked at your YouTube channel. Terrific videos there! They are all excellent but the "Osprey Bob The Movie" was my favorite. Amazing tracking of the osprey in flight. I was also really impressed by your Bluebirds feeding baby chicks in the field and on the branches. Amazing! Don't have the time to watch all of your videos right now so I will be back.

I would like to learn more about your methods. This is not the thread for it but if you post more details somewhere I would like to see it.

Dave

Dito. But I prefered the Bluebirds:

Thanks Dave (and Daran & mitesh) for the kind words! I'm very much a rank amateur but am having a lot of fun learning wildlife videography. Needless to say it's quite a rabbit hole to venture down but I find it personally very rewarding. I think a lot of still photographers are going to want to try shooting video with their new mirrorless cameras and since there's far more similarities than differences between brands when it comes to video, maybe Fred M. should consider creating a brand-agnostic videography forum.

As for any questions, feel free send me a PM - always happy to chat and compare notes.

Cheers!

A strobe problem on the Z9 is cropping up over on the Nikon forum. I'm still not sure what is the advantage of getting rid of the mechanical shutter. People might be mistaken with Nikon going aggressive on price to get people in on the Z9 and passing along the mechanical shutter saving to the customers.

Personally, I would love to hear any explanation on why HSS wouldn't work with e-shutter before the Z9 and how Nikon managed to make it workable somewhat.

I am sure it is just an issue with the reverse engineered flash control protocol that Godox use with Nikon. That's likely why Nikon have started to collaborate with Profoto and Nissen to help them make fully compatible flashes. Since Godox is very common nowadays, I would expect them to fix such issues in firmware.

The advantage of leaving out the mechanical shutter is of course that there are fewer parts in the camera and the user doesn't have to juggle between fully mechanical, electronic front curtain and fully electronic shutter. There might even be space for a built-in ND system in a future model. LED ad panel manufacturers can fix their products to be more photography-friendly if they want their ads to be seen in images. Of course, it is the photographer's task to avoid unsolicited ads appearing in their coverage.

What's the Z9 strobe problem?

AFAIK, A1 is not completely free from flash issues because it does not have full mechanical shutter (e.g. HSS banding above certain ss, which gets worse when using EFCS)...

AFAIK the HSS issues on the A1 depend on the flash. The Godox TT685 works fine for HSS on my A1 only from 1/500s to about 1/2000s. Shooting faster yields banding. The faster the exposure the more obvious the banding. Using mechanical/EFCS is about the same as using electronic mode. There is no non-EFCS mechanical shutter on the A1.
I suspect the underlying cause is an interaction between the super fast stack read mode and the pulsing of the strobe in HSS mode. This would depend on the frequency at which the flash is strobing. I expect the Z9 to have exactly the same problem.

I don’t do much video. Does it do 8k video far better? How? Or is it incremental in some modes but not better in some?

Someone: Mark, do you think the Z9 is worth considering for those that are primarily interested in video? Is it that much better than the A1?

Someone else: Z9 has quite a few advantages over A1 for video.

Mark Smith: What are they? I’d like to know. I think it depends on the glass and what your subjects are. The a1 with the 200 600 for wildlife video is hard to beat!

That first "someone" was me.

On paper, the Z9 advantages are the ability to record ProRes HQ 422 (and 12-bit ProRes Raw in an upcoming firmware update) internally, and oversampled 4k HQ up to 60p (the A1 is binned at all 4k resolutions save 4k DX). Another interesting feature of the Z9 is the ability to capture 4k in DX with a 2.3x(!) crop, which implies a 1:1 pixel readout. This provides incredible (2.3x) reach and very sharp imagery (no binning/line skipping) when using very high-quality lenses, and could be very useful with the new 400Z.

So on paper the Z9's video specs are interesting, but real world results often tell a different story; hence my question to Mark. He didn't seem to be familiar with the Z9 video specs at the time of posting but I'm hoping he'll offer some observations after he's spent more time with the camera vs. the A1.

Well looks like the Z9 has a serious banding issue? https://diglloyd.com/blog/2022/20220213_1930-NikonZ-horizontal-lines.html

Likely a bug as Lloyd has suggested, I've shot thousands of frames with the Z9 in different lighting conditions and never has anything like this popped up.

Maybe better said that it looks like "a Z9 has a banding issue" until we see more reports indicating a wide spread problem.

Since it is stated that NX studio won't even open this file (and the other shots taken are reported to be fine), it sounds like some kind of data corruption took place. I'm surprised that the camera user who reported the problem says "I can’t find any place to report this bug (assuming it’s a bug), to Nikon." In most places Nikon does answer telephone calls and has an online contact form, and authorized service centers can also be contacted. Is he in a country where Nikon has no support?

You'll be aware of his extremely nice videos of birds hunting fish (and whatnot). Better codecs or higher resolution may just not solve a problem that Mark currently has.

That is clearly data corruption and not banding in the classic sense, and I would be hesitant to trust anything else the author of that article puts out if he thinks that’s truly electronic shutter banding. And hey, look, another Sony card with questionable performance. My anecdotal list grows

Never seen data corruption limited to specific rows written to a memory card. Are you saying this data corruption is casued by his Sony memory cards? Well if you read into the camera owners history he has more than one card and sees the same issue (highly unlikely he has two bad cards, much more likely he has a Camera with either a firmware bug or failing hardware). I think Loyd is correct In that this is a firmware bug... Something to do with the readout of the sensor to memory before being written off the the card ? Maybe. But you can't say anything bad about the Z9 on this forum or you may be attacked by rabid nikonians who can't admit their camera has problems like any other vendor

It’s probably a very one off type issue no matter what it is. The fact that Nikon software can’t open the file is a clear indication of data corruption. The card slot may have a flaw, the camera internals may have a flaw, but I highly doubt it’s the firmware as I’ve never seen this issue reported elsewhere. The guy with the camera just needs to do a warranty return and be done with it.
