I highly doubt Geoff would swap his A1 for a Z9. Hard to believe

Or better yet, don't need a battery grip at all

There are NO downsides to have a mechanical shutter as an "option" for flash work (but obviously adds some additional cost to the camera) . Everyone knows the A9 and A1 were built with electronic shutter in mind. The A1 is already pushing more data than the Z9 can handle. Nikons 45mpx RAW at 20FPs vs Sony 50mpx RAW at 30 FPS (the Nikon can only do 30FPS 45mpx in JPEG mode because there is less processing power under the hood). Also that 3.6m dot EVF on z9 is old...and only 60Hz. It is not 120hz like some believed. Folks also wonder how Nikon got the price down... well a 3.6m dot 60hz EVF costs far less than the A1's 9m dot EVF) Lastly, who wants 120fps 11mpx jpegs? For most, useless. I don't see anything special with the Z9 other than it's big size...which is also a NO go for me. I'm waiting to see experienced birder's test the AF in this camera against the A1. And don't be surprised if Sony pushes a big firmware update to the A1 to further enhance or add functionality which is already top notch, as the A1s dual Bionz processors have room to grow I am sure.

I don't understand all these comments about the grip and battery of the Z9. You're not going to convince a person who wants an integrated grip that a smaller body with an optional grip is the way to go. You can't argue away what "feels" right to them.

You can't convince a person who doesn't want to swap a battery at all that they should carry two because the A1 can get more pictures out of two batteries and to have multiple chargers to charge them at the same time.

You can't convince a person to spend $1000 dollars more plus grip money and extra battery money when they "feel" they can get it done for less with some single digit % differences in performance.

In other words you're not going to get a RAM truck guy into a Ford no matter how many turbos they put in it because the guy has his heart on a Cummings Diesel or a Chevy guy into a Ford truck because it's made out of aluminum because he knows a steel body can handle impacts better just in case he decides to drop bricks into the bed from 6 feet high.

From a strategic perspective, I am of the opinion the Nikon Z9 size and price will do what the Z6/7(II) have not to date been able to do for Nikon, and that is drive vast amounts of completely satisfied Nikon DSLR users to start spending their Nikon money again and buy the Z9--mirrorless is now an afterthought +/-

The Z9's size is THE confront zone for the heavily DSLR invested Nikon DSLR customer base and IMO opinion will mean to Nikon what the Canon R5/R6 did for Canon.

Likewise, Sony has been first-mover for a long time in this high performance mirrorless segment, starting with maybe the A9. Both Canon and Nikon have had plenty of time to reverse engineer, scrutinize, monitor real-world and now cherry pick the tech that goes in their competitive bodies with slight adjustments and improvements Some improvements more significant that others,

The Three-way race is officially here.

Interesting that the article photoshopped a battery-gripped A7rIV to look like an A1. Notice the missing mechanical dial above the A1 logo and the A7rIV’s IR sensor vs the A1’s combo IR & White-balance sensor. They hid the lens mount difference by adding a 55mm lens.

Well the A1 for me.
I switched years ago from Nikon - D800E - to Sony - A7r, A7r2, A9, now A1 - perfect timing.
No going back for me.
Still have some Nikon glass for my Sony cameras, like the Noct-NIKKOR 58/1.2.
Changed from manual focus only to AF with the TAP (TechArt Pro AF adapter).
Life is good!

K-H.

PS: All my Sony cameras have permanently a battery grip attached. Working just fine.

How do you have your Subject Select Setting for Eye AF set up on your A1 so you can switch between Human, Animal and Bird AF while shooting?

Admittedly I have been lazy to set up/customize my A1 like I typically do (been busy with other cameras in my life) but when I saw this auto switch between subject type feature on the Z9 I liked it and decided I would like to have that too. It forced me to spend a few minutes looking into how to setup on the A1. Wrong subject AF mode has slipped me up a few times already.

Not automagically, but I ended up customizing my C1 button on the A1 so I could quickly toggle/press between Human, Animal Bird AF while looking through the EVF. I am probably the last to configure this on the A1...but okay.

I also see I can set up something similar to allow to quickly control Left Eye and Right Eye AF too.

There has clearly been an exodus away from Nikon (and to a lesser extent Canon) to Sony over the past few years and I don't see the Z9 reversing that. It should however be a fantastic option for those who have stayed and intend to stay with Nikon.

There are several important (to me) metrics where the Z9 is clearly superior - price, ergonomics, faster storage, faster sensor readout, superior experience when quickly changing lenses, sensor stabilization, low light focusing, etc.

I would lose lose enough money switching to the Z9 that its not worthwhile for me. If I was upgrading from an older camera, I would not choose the A1 at that price point.

If there is truth to this report, lots and lots of Z9 preorders:
https://petapixel.com/2021/11/05/despite-high-production-it-could-take-a-year-to-see-the-z9-in-stock/

I don't think I've ever seen specific preorder numbers reported before for any brand, other than general comments, so no idea if this is truly a significant amount of camera preorders or not compared to Sony/Canon.

At this point, it all just sounds like very good news for Nikon.

There better be for Nikon's sake. They are bleeding users and sales, and now the third largest maker of High end cameras with Canon still being first and Sony being second.

Answer: First page of My Menu, hoping Sony will get around to having that feature in the future as well.
I am using 3 buttons - down, left, C3 - to control IBIS for adapted mechanical only lenses.

Thanks ! Always interesting and helpful to know how others set things up.

FWIW, I found this video below with some interesting ideas too: "Using Eye AF function with the custom key"

And just recently bumped into this treasure trove of ideas too by Shuttermuse: "How to Perfectly Customize Every Sony Mirrorless Camera"

Shutter Muse, are Dan Carr's reviews and for his website. I have been reading a lot of his reviews and postings for some years.

I like to have all the eyeAF stuff in one place, on the control wheel:
* left - subject choice
* center - on/off
* right - which eye (left/right) choice
.

Isn’t everything about writing up a comparison of products when you don’t have both in hand goofy?

RoamingScott wrote:
To say that Nikon showed “balls” by getting rid of the mechanical shutter is very weird and shows a lot of brand bias. There is no advantage to having fewer options (same with the size argument). Also the A1 doesn’t have heat issues, so that was a very goofy statement on their part calling the Z9 size an advantage.

The ergonomics are far, far worse on the Z9 for me. I returned the GFX 100 for similar reasons. Huge and heavy are anti ergonomic and anticomfort, and to me, antifun. The sensor readout is for all intents and purposes, identical. Close mount is horrible. I don't know what "superior experience when quickly changing lenses" means.

The storage being on a cheaper CFexpress is indeed superior, as is ibis improving ios.
