Thanks for the explanation!
The only information about focus breathing we have so far is from Ricci, how accurate, I hope he knew what he was doing.
Nikon probably managed to minimize it, compared to Sony 100-400, with some noticable breathing.
It can't be much better than the Sony as they focus at the exact same 0.98m (at 400mm) and the MM is 0.38x for Nikon and 0.35x for Sony. So yes it is slightly better but it still must be changing a lot from 400mm. Did anyone read if the 0.38x is at the long end or the short end or is it throughout the zoom range? Nikon lists different MFDs for different focal lengths but just a constant 0.38x on the detailed spec sheet.
Anyways, it doesn't really matter what it is....all that matters is the 0.38x and how close you have to get to achieve that.

How could anything better than a Sony?... Impossible!

It's by default...
Ricci stated that there is no focus breathing, we'll see how right he was, once we get it.
On the other side, Sony 100-400 was reported with heavy focus breathing at long end, as far as I remember.
I just watched Taylor Jackson's review on 24-120mm, he is firm that lens is free from focus breathing,
so Nikon really pays attention to it, not sure about Sony, and honestly, I don't care.
Aren't these focus breathing comments talking about something a little different than what we are talking about at MFD. I know there was some lengthy discussion about this on some threads but I can't recall which board they were on.
All the lenses are very close to their stated focal length at infinity...minus some rounding off. All of these lenses have to shorten their focal length to focus close up. If people say the Sony "focus breathes" at the short distances and give 0.35x at 0.98m then the Nikon giving 0.38x at 0.98m is certainly shortening the focal length also. Otherwise the MM would be much greater.
The short end is fixed with the MM values so easy to compare and again...who cares what the "focal length" really is. The infinity end is going to be pretty much on the actual stated focal length. What matters more to me is how much magnification one is getting in the 20-50 ft range where I tend to shoot birds. That could certainly be different between lenses like it is when I compare my primes v zooms.

You picked my post before I deleted it.
I double checked, it's actually Canon 100-400 known for focus breathing, not Sony lens, my bad memory, sorry.
I understand it doesn't bother you for 20-50ft distance, same here, but it may be important for close ups.
Whatever it is, I'm getting 100-400s, so we'll see.

Actually I meant that at 20-50 is where it would bother me the most. Like the Sony 200-600 at those distances gives less magnification compared to my 600GM. The Sony 100-400 gave less magnification than my 400DOII.
We already know the close distances (or at least MFD) as that is stated in the specs 0.38x v 0.35x. The Canon 100-400II which was the first lens touted for this "semi-macro" type feature is 0.31x.

Don't buy it!!!
I just sent the Leofoto foot that I bought for my Nikkor Z 70-200mm f2.8S back via Amazon return. The foot would not lock tight. There was a "wiggle" even when I cranked the knob to lock the foot in place. What's more, when I pressed the release on the "tightened" foot, the foot would slide off.
I will be buying a Hejnar foot that is a bit more permanent. The foot is screwed into the tripod socket. I use a foot like this with my 500mm PF lens, and it has been trouble free thus far. Unless you need/want to remove the foot, I suggest you buy one of Hejnar products.
I bought an iShoot version that has an upturned lip for secure carrying. It clamps down snugly without much force. The safety catch sticks out more than I like, so I cut off the curled part of the release tab and smoothed it out with a Dremel. Now there is room for carrying even with gloves (two fingered), and accidentally pressing the release tab is greatly reduced as well.
But I do have a lot of Hejnar accessories, and if you want a secure foot, that looks like the one to get.
Any semi-reliable rumors on whether this lens is still on track to ship in 2021? Feels a tad early. My 14-24 was pre-ordered on 9/16/20 and delivered on 11/6/20. The 100-400 was pre-ordered on 10/28 so if it ships this year it will be very end of Dec which appears unlikely.
Could anyone tell me what is the maximum aperture of this lens at 100, 200, 300 and 400mm? That is, how does the lens aperture change with focal lengths?

I guess it won't be significantly different from the AF-S 80-400G (FL; max aperture; minimum aperture):
80mm; f/4.5; f/32
105mm; f/4.8; f/36
135mm; f/4.8; f/36
200mm; f/5; f/40
300mm; f/5.6; f/40
400mm; f/5.6; f/40
"When this lens is attached, [Mechanical Shutter] cannot be selected from the custom menu [Shutter Method], and only [Auto] or [Electronic Front Curtain Shutter] can be selected."
Some Korean user asked to Nikon company and their answer was "This is forced beacuse EFCS or Electronic Shutter has advantage over Mechinaical Shutter in reducing camera shake."
I googled a bit, wasn't able to find any detailed informaition about this feature. Maybe they are using EFCS or ES when using slow shutter speed and automatically change to mechanical shutter when using high shutter speed.
When using the 105 MC the option to select mechanical shutter is also disabled in the camera menu. There is Auto and EFCS that can be selected. I am not sure what the camera actually does at fast shutter speeds, does it use mechanical or always EFCS. Nikon should probably give users at least the option to choose which shutter they use. I get it that Nikon are trying to protect users from their own mistakes (of using mechanical shutter when it is detrimental to sharpness). On the other hand when using the Z 85/1.8 S, all three options are available. This makes sense as in a lens commonly used for portraits, out of focus rendering may be considered critical. I haven't noticed anything but excellent bokeh from the 105 MC though, even though using EFCS.
It is scheduled for release here on Dec 17th. However my dealer told me that supposedly for the whole country, Nikon is sending a whopping 2 lenses in the first batch, one each for the two main Nikon dealers in the country.
I'm excited about getting the lens, but there is no point stressing about when it shows up. Fortunately, there are plenty of options that can fill the gap until the 100-400 arrives. Furthermore, it is hard to believe anything that dealers say. It is not that they intend to deceive, but they often don't know when anything is expected to arrive.
I have a good friend who is the head manager of the Pro Brick and Mortar in my area. They do all of the rentals for sports, weddings, production, etc... He said that Nikon and Canon are giant mysteries... "stuff arrives when it arrives." He said Sony was better, but their predictability is becoming increasingly like Nikon and Canon. Evidently, Fuji is the one reliable company when it comes to predicting shipping following an order.

I am not in a big hurry as long as it arrives before my trip to Botswana next June.
However, next week for my trip, there should be a chance to see Hume's pheasant where
600mm may be a bit too long. So I harassed my dealer that since they could not get me Z9 before
the trip, they better give me something for the trip Otherwise I will take my A7r IV with 100-400GM there
instead
But I do have 300PF, 70-200/2.8s + TC as a backup so no big deal if I don't get 100-400 in a couple of days.
