p.3 #1 · Which Voigtlander lens has the best rendering?

I like my 40/1.2 for its high contrast, rich colors and its subject isolation with acceptable resolution wide open.
It wasn't too long ago that many people were disputing the special image qualities of Cosina/Zeiss lenses. People now are more open to appreciating qualities beyond simple resolution and contrast.

Yep; the lenses most likely to be criticised were the ones that were purposely undercorrected.

The 50 and 85 Planars and the 35 1.4 Distagon come to mind. The Canon 50 and 85 Ls. The Nikon 58 too.

The people that criticize them don't get them or appreciate them.

Too bad for them.

We can't all be artists !

I meant to indicate that since “rendering” is ill defined that it was often used imprecisely. As such my “proper name” for a series of lens and image characteristics wouldn’t be any more precise to others (if even for myself).

The fact that people don't understand the term or misuse it does not invalidate the term.

Rendering is simply the sum total of the lens's effect on an image.

It is a product of the design and materials used for any given lens.

I'm not a Wikipedia fan but I'll give an example that might help:

"Terroir (/tɛˈrwɑːr/, French: [tɛʁwaʁ]; from terre, "land") is a French term used to describe the environmental factors that affect a crop's phenotype, including unique environment contexts, farming practices and a crop's specific growth habitat. Collectively, these contextual characteristics are said to have a character; terroir also refers to this character.[1]"

Similarly lenses exhibit a phenotype and are commonly described by their phenotypic characteristics.

Also -

My name is David. My sobriquet is Dave.

If "rendering" is indeed a sobriquet it implies that a more formal, more proper name exists.

What would that be? What is the "terroir" of an optical instrument?

The term might exist but I don't think I've heard it.

p.3 #5 · Which Voigtlander lens has the best rendering?

I have several Voigtlanders: 12/5.6, 15/4.5, 35/2 APO, 50/3.5 Heliar, 65/2 APO, and 180/4 APO.

The 65/2 APO is the best of the bunch. It is superlative. Color, contrast, sharpness... it is transparent in its rendering. It's the lens I reach for when the light is bad. Its only drawback is its size.

The most disappointing is the 35/2 APO. It's good, but it doesn't wow like the 65. I prefer my Zeiss 35/1.4 ZMs rendering to the 35 APO.

Assuming that I would like to get a Voigtlander lens and renders is the first and foremost criteria, which one should I buy?

That you very much for that lesson in etymology.

My CV 75 f/1.5 in M mount arrived I

Only had time to take a few quick shots in the living room. All wide open to see how it renders. Nice and sharp in the center with just a touch of dreamy, then falling off gently to beautiful creamy bokeh. I think I am going to like this one when I get to know it.

I am looking forward to shooting some portraits and street with this lens.

Sorry no EXIF available on this adapted M mount lens.

What do you guys think.

The build and feel of this lens is unique and amazing as with all CV lenses. I just love shooting them.
