This is a popular location for burrowing owls but for whatever reasons, I was there alone this afternoon. After taking images of them while the sun was out I watched in dismay that they stayed around the burrow which is located lower than the horizon. I waited and waited but there was no movement. I packed my stuff, loaded everything in the car, hopped in the car. My car was parked at a distance, I started to drive away and made the turn. The headlight of the car was on and when I made the turn, the headlight somehow made 2 of them fly away and guess what? They landed on the perch some 20-25 feet away from the burrow! I immediately stopped the car, took everything out again and I started shooting.
One of the juveniles flew away, circled around and I was praying that it would land back on the perch and it did! That's the first image. The perch was wobbly and the dad on the left had to steady himself because of that. They sat there for a fairly long time and I knew sooner or later, they would take off but the lighting was getting dimmer and dimmer pretty fast. And in order for me to get sharp image, I had to use a high shutter speed. What to do, what to do? All the sudden, I saw a fairly big bird coming from the left, It was one of the red-tailed hawks that patrol the sky in the area. Of course, both owls took off immediately and I got one of them in the last 4 images. Everybody scrambled back to the burrow and safe!
FYI, the spot is located at the beginning of an airport runway. And one of beacon lights there, which blinks at a certain interval, when captured from far away may look like the sun but it is not. It adds something to the image though, especially in #9.
Thank you very much for stopping by and please, feel free to leave any feedback,
Joshua
