p.2 #1 · Focus magnifier issue with Loxia on A1

I tested my Voigtländer 15/4.5 on the A7RV and it worked fine with focus magnification.

I also tested my Loxia 21/2.8 and it is flaky and I often can't go into focus magnify and the few times I do manage to get into focus magnify, it bounces out by itself again.

I also tested the Loxia on my old A7RII and there it works as it should. So at this point I am happy I kept my old body and didn't trade it in, but I would be happier if Sony/Zeiss could work this incompability out.

p.2 #2 · Focus magnifier issue with Loxia on A1

Hello folks, I got myself an A7Cr and it exhibits the same issue mentioned here.

I saw that there Zeiss was developing a fix? Any news on that?

What are you guys doing to be able to use Loxias on R5s and A1s?

One of the reasons of getting the 7Cr was exactly for the Loxias so would be a shame not to be able to use them (no issues whatsoever with the A7rIV I have).

p.2 #3 · Focus magnifier issue with Loxia on A1

I am fiddling with switching aperture until I find one that allows me to stay in magnified view long enough to focus. It's annoying, but for my shooting style it doesn't cause a huge amount of problems.

The Zeiss Facebook group said it's a known issue, and that if I'm in Europe I should send it in for service. When I told them I was in the US, they became unresponsive for a while. Eventually told me to contact xxxxx, and they could help me from there. That seems like an odd email address for Zeiss lenses, I have not pursued this yet. I've been quite busy and my son has some medical issues that made me put this on the back burner.

Eventually I plan on trying to pursue this with Zeiss USA.

Also, I've seen some reference that someone in Europe sent a lens in for a fix, they had to replace the encoder that is used to read and communicate aperture.

So no definitive word per se....

Thanks tsdevine.

It seems that my only misbehaving lens is the 35mm. 50 and 21 don't exhibit this behaviour, as of yet.

I have tried to change aperture back and fourth when the magnification keeps jumping and it seems to help. But then it creates other problems ofc.

Not ideal though.

My Loxia 21 I bought right when it was released maybe does it slightly less. My brand new within a year Loxia 25 (2 of them...don't ask) and Loxia 85 all have the issue. I even tried a Loxia 25 from Lensrentals and it also had the problem.

My "extra" Loxia 25 will be my guinea pig when I try to get it fixed.

Adding some experiences here.

A7IV and A7C user.

I just returned a loxia 50mm f2 due to this issue on my a7iv. Didn't happen on my A7C. I exchanged the Loxia 50 for a sigma 35mm 1.2. Brilliant lens, but the aperture reading jumps around on my a7iv like crazy when I use the aperture ring at f1.2. While on 1.2, the screen got stuck on 2.8 earlier today. Again, not an issue on the A7C.

I love this giant sigma and don't want to return it. Is there a fix?

I think I've heard about twitchy 1.2 aperture on the Sigma a long time ago, but it was before current gen Sony cameras were introduced. Thus, the only solution was to replace/repair the lens.
My Sigma worked equally well on A7III as it does now on A1 .
This is worrying though, as it seems more lens can be affected when paired with current and future Sony bodies...
