Not sure whether this is the best sub-forum to post this in, but I didn't see an outright good match.
Am appealing to professional or semi-pro photogs, so please let me know if it should be elsewhere - thx!
I'm revamping my site and moving to WordPress. Quite the learning curve, but probably still easier than the first HTML site I did in '99
Would be very grateful for any recommendations from anyone who has used a specific WP theme for their site (whether they self-coded or paid someone to do it).
* I'm specifically looking for a good proofing mechanism
- need to be able to proof whole galleries, ideally in a tree structure so I can group galleries by client.
- want the client to just be able to click a button on a photo to like or select it for approval
- want to be able to make 'editor's choice' selections in the same way which display separately
-- have seen a red triangle in one corner of the image for client likes and a gold star for editor's choice
- need to have a couple of portfolio pages, but every theme has that
* Would prefer a dark version but proofing comes first.
* Looking to keep the cost down, ideally under $60 unless there's an AMAZEBALLS feature I don't currently know that I need?!
* I'm a semi pro, so I won't be uploading more than a couple of galleries per month.
* Respectably quick loading times would be good, but again, I don't expect to have hundreds of galleries
* I already have hosting set up.
Open to recommendations for other useful prerequisites if you have them.
Currently I'm considering:
- Kinatrix / KX photo studio
- BlackSilver

Why not look at Shootproof? I have a website, but send my clients a link to Shootproof for them to select photos from their gallery. You can easily set up galleries and the galleries have the ability for the client to mark photos as favorites.
Comes with all the usual frustrations of any Wordpress build and I'm no expert, but if you want to see how mine turned out, you can see the pre-release here:

I appreciate taking the time to make the suggestion. Looks like the cost of shootproof would pay for the theme in six months. If I was a jobbing photog I could probably justify the cost in order to save time and shoot more, but I think I'll hack a site together for WP practice and see how I get on.
Thanks for such a thorough reply. I appreciate all the pointers
- great to know which theme you used
- also great to be able to see what you were able to achieve with it
- finally, as a non-pro, I appreciate the link to your site to be able to see BTS pics of your studio setup so I have a chance to learn a little more about studio portrait shoots!
The site looks solid, I feel pretty confident that I can put something decent together. Now I just need more portfolio material...

Photocrati/Imagely themes have many photography themes available, I've been using Photocrati for years, and it does make Wordpress a bit more friendly. Worth a look...

I haven't used WP for my personal photography in a number of years (I can give many reasons why, but that's a separate discussion) but Photocrati was what I used in the past. Glad to see it's still around. I occasionally work with WP on some client websites and just wanted to chime in that you should make sure to install security plugins (such as Wordfence, Sucuri, etc) to harden your site against common WP vulnerabilities and exploits. I have seen a number of WP sites sit around without being updated and without security tools become hacked with spam links and other issues that can be difficult to fix on your own.
After messing with it I ended up with my own design, I did start with one of the themes until I learnt how to used the Tatus header and footer builder.
I originally went with one of them themes a changed it a little but the site looked like 99% of all the photo sites out there so went with my own flow.
I would have preferred not to use Wordpress but Drupal 8 is a pain to install vs Drupal 7 which is what I would have used but its end of life now. Just some things in WP are annoying usage wise, too many hoops and settings to get something changed in the theme.
