I wasn't prepared for just how horrible the AF was going to be. I knew it was going to be slower but not this bad. I need to check my settings today too, went out on a walk yesterday with the 65mm, checked the photos later at night and saw how many missed focus on stationary objects. On the other hand I also took pics of my brothers puppy running around outside and it nailed focus about 50% of the time, so that was a surprise. Like always, when those pics hit focus they are awesome.

But the one thing that's been annoying me is in MF I have peaking and zooming in when I take the pics. Everything is in focus but when I see the pics on the computer I'm always slightly off, so thats a bit frustrating. It always seems like it's back focusing a bit more. I'm sure this is an error on my part or something and maybe I need to get used to focusing a bit more in front when I see that.

But I'm on the hunt for a fringer adapter, I want to give that a try before I think of selling the 50s ii.

Are you using AF-S? Use AF-S. Pretend it doesn't have AF-C.

USE AF-S.

I'll give that a try! I've only been using AF-C.

as long as your AF box is smaller than your subject, you'll get very reliable results.

Think of AF-C as the gap between Manual and AF-S never to be used, hah!

Thanks, I try. I used it for an ad recently. The lens works.

I had a complete brain fart. I was using AF-S. Going to give it a try tomorrow if the weather is nice. But I think I'm going to list my lenses for sale by this weekend, see if I can sell them all for the 55 1.7 or get a fringer adapter with a few Canon lenses and see if that helps.

Do you have any luck with Pre-AF? Going to give that a try and if it works well map it to a button so I can turn it on and off since it seems like it will kill the battery.

For medium format, absolutely.

Most likely improvements in AI are going to make it so that in a few years there won't be a big difference between Fuji's GFX autofocusing and the autofocusing from the best FF cameras. But those companies, especially Sony, are going to be a step ahead for a while; Fuji's resources are a lot more limited technology-wise.

All the AI in the world isn't going to make the 80 1.7 focus faster.

I've never had any problems with the AF speed of the 55 or 80 on 50S II. It's the pointless hunting back and forth every time you want to view an image on the screen that is extremely annoying. It doesn't add anything at all. Just bad software that has nothing with AF to do.

BTW, I also find the 55 very, very difficult to focus manually. Not only does it "jump" in too large increments; the focusing ring is more or less the whole barrel and it's almost impossible not to twist it and bump focus when tripping the shutter. No damping of the ring what so ever.

I would prefer an optically identical performing pure manual focus lens, every time.

As a user of 50s2, Fringer + EF lenses I can give you my $0.02 which is you're going to be frustrated if you're measuring for speed. 50s2 is kinda slow and while it will focus relatively accurately with many lenses it won't react quickly. Anything faster than a slow loris probably works better on a modern FF or APS camera.

All the camera companies are huge companies, I assume it is the business case that drives what they spend development money on. For Fuji, they probably are struggling to make the case to develop top tier autofocus for medium format when nobody else is offering that and even if Hasselbad did so, that's hardly the same market. If you look at the top camera companies as a whole, not just as camera companies, their margins aren't super high. Olympus has become more profitable by dumping cameras and focusing on medical imaging and leading in that sector. Now their profit margins are higher than Sony, Canon, Fuji, and Nikon.

Were the adapted lenses you've tried any faster better with autofocus/hunting than the Fuji GF 63mm?

I'm really torn all the time like I've said. I am still new to the 50s ii and haven't been able to use it much since it's been winter and I hate winter. But the weather is finally warming up so I'll be able to get more use and hopefully get a bit better with focusing.

The Fuji 35-70 isn't bad, but the 63 is really slow with focusing. I would have thought that trying to photograph a black dog running around would be much harder than photographing a person barely moving. I get frustrated when I see so many photos with missed focus but as I've mentioned before, when the focus hits I'm just in love with the photos. I would still need to look at Sony or even the canon stuff more but now I see the difference in the Fuji vs Sony colors. BUT the differences could also be down to the editing.

I did want to maybe do a sony ASP-c and Fuji 50s ii setup, but if I go with fringer/canon lens for the 50s ii I'm also looking up the canon cameras. Wondering how the Canon RP or r8 is for action photography.

You need a GFX100/GFX100S/GFX100II/GFX100SII. The 50 series doesn't have PDAF. That's the key.

I recently bought the 55/1.7 and it's been a fantastic addition. Exactly what I've been looking for.

Long before buying it, I was buying a lot of 55-ish vintage lenses, and I've tried most of them by now. If it cost less than $500, I've used it.

My two favorites are a Topcor 55/1.4 and a Fuji 55/1.8, both outstanding older lenses.

But none of them can touch the GF55 in terms of saturation, sharpness, bokeh and a 3D "pop".

Does the 55 1.7 do that as well? (the racking back and forth when turning the camera ON/OFF, or when previewing images). My 80 1.7 certainly does, and it's really annoying.

Yup. They have the same type of focusing motor, so it probably has something with that to do.

Rented the 55 1.7 for a job and agree it’s my favorite prime for the system. Perfect all round focal length for multiple purposes.
