p.1 #1 · Upgrading 7D Mark II to 1DX Mark II or Canon R5?

I'm doing some research on upgrading my 7D Mark II to another body. I'm mainly into bird photography and wondering between the 1DX II vs Canon R5.

For the R5, I wouldn't invest heavily into RF right away and would adapt EF lenses like the Canon 500mm or Sigma 150-600. For that reason I'm wondering if 1DX II will suffice?

Why the upgrade? Want better low-light performance and tracking.
I'm not thrilled about spending $3.8k on the R5 but if it's much better than the 1DX II then perhaps it's worth it.

Anyone upgrade from the 7D2? What did you get and why? Any advice/recommendations/thoughts/comments?

I would go for the R5 hands down. I've owned all three of those cameras in question. The 1DXII does have much better AF than the 7DII but the R5 has better AF than the 1DXII.

The 1DXII will see you giving up a lot of resolution on the subject. The R5 will see you give up just a little resolution and IMO gives a much nicer image than the 7DII despite that.

Adapted Canon 500 will perform as good as any RF lens anyways so no worries about that.

What about his "low light improvement" requirement?

I agree with arbitrage here. The R5 would be the way to go, in your use case. He's right in that you will be giving up about 0.8mp/cm2 which is a resolution "loss" mathematically, but the R5's sensor handles that with ease. As far as low light, that's subjective. What is low light to you? Will the R5 require a higher ISO to maintain a feasible shutter speed, sure, but unless you're going higher than 25.6k on your ISO, it's really not going to matter substantially. I suspect you're more concerned with the ISO's in the 3200-6400 range, because that's what you're use to on the 7D Mark II.

I agree—go for the R5. Its AF is "you've got to use it to believe it" good. In addition to Face/Eye Detection working great with my adapted 500 f/4L (II) (with and without either of the EX III extenders), and it covers virtually the entire screen. In fact, AF is extremely fast/accurate with all of my Canon lenses (that's all I have), and IBIS provides a bit of IS to my non-IS lenses, like the 180L macro, 135 f/2L, and 11-24L I like that I can save all camera settings to a card.

I had both the 5Ds R and 7DII (both sold now), and the very slight drop in the R5's comparative resolution hasn't been noticeable. 45 mpxls is still a lot of resolution, and the sensor's DR is even a little better than the 5D Mark IV.

I can think of a few advantages a 1DXII has, including longer battery life (I carry spare batteries), optical viewfinder (brighter/crisper display, but lacks the R5's data display capabilities), vertical controls (whihc you can get with a battery grip on the R5), But it's also bigger/heavier than the R5, and I really appreciate the R5's lower weight and compactness (part of why I switched from series 1 cameras a while back).

Ditto for the R5. It is by far the best low light / high ISO body I've owned, with relatively "clean", low noise captures at 6400 ISO, that would have been trash at ISO 1600 with my former 7D-2.

Bird photography = R5

Other than that, you should be deciding between the R6 and R5, not the 1DXII and R5. If R5 is too expensive, take a look at the R6 as it's about half the price. See discussion here:

I sold my 7D II as soon as I got the R5. It's a heck of a camera, and you don't lose out on too many megapixels in crop mode. I bought the R6 first and considered holding on to the 7D II until Canon introduced a crop body, but since the R5 is full-frame, it's more versatile. I have zero regrets.

I too have (had) all three of the models you specified.

The R5 will always give you more reach, despite the lens in use, due to its significant increase of megapixels, and your ability to heavily crop images.

As far as "low light" I'll still pick the R5 over my 1DXII.

Huge low light improvement with R5 v 7DII. 1DXII better still but I think downsized R5 will pretty much match it so never at a disadvantage.

I think Glenn did some direct comparisons of high-ISO bird images of R5 v 7DII in this video. Glenn stayed with the 7DII for a long time but the R5 has blown him away based on his recent videos and comments.

Be crazy to consider anything else but the R5 (animal AF is amazing) if you can swing it. At 17MP in crop mode it basically has a 7D2 built-in.

As i mentioned in a new thread about EF lenses which fall behind R5 resolution, it is safer to stay in the EF system. Do not be surprised if not all your EF lenses and even RF shall be optimized for the R5.
Cropping with pixels requires good pixels. High res requires superb optics.

Despite everyone being keen for you to spend the most money possible, why not the R6

No top LCD = No buy

But yeah, R6 is same MP as 1DXII so if low light is more important than pixels per area than the R6 is a good choice as AF is better than 1DXII (I assume based on using R5)

How much are you cropping?

If you fill the frame ff is better. If you have to crop a lot (often needed) the 7D2 has higher pixel density and is supposed to have good high iso for aps. 20mp ff cropped to aps gives 8mp even r5 a little less mp cropped to aps than the 7D2. So you might not see much in the way of iq advantages if you crop. The 7D2 might even be better.

If you haven't already learned high iso pp that might be more effective than a different camera at getting high iso

Considering I sold/traded my 1DXIII for an R5, my vote is clear. R5!
The AF abilities with eye tracking are simply amazing. The 1DXIII has similar capabilities, but you can only access the best AF features in live view, which is very difficult and cumbersome. The R5 is a joy.

I appreciate all the responses. Looks like R5 is in my future. Does anyone know of any good deals on the R5?
