p.1 #1 · Tokina Zoom Super Wide Angle AF 12-24mm f/4 AT-X 124AF Pro DX
Hi to all;
Anybody haves a info about the : Tokina Zoom Super Wide Angle AF 12-24mm f/4 AT-X 124AF Pro DX ? (Maybe it's old news but i did use the search function)
It looks like a very good/decent wide angle lens and a reasonable price (Around 450-500US$).
Here is a web page about it (Sorry I don't speak Japanese, but as far as I understand it's a very good lens. And some sample images from the Tokina 12-24 F4 it looks like Tokina is slightly better than the Nikon 12-24 but maybe it's just me)
I've tryed the Sigma version and the Nikon 12-24 mm in a local shop over here.I like the Nikon version i bealive it's much better than the Sigma but it is out of my budget limit. This Tokina looks too good to be true.Half the price and slightly better performance?Nice to hear some opinions.

I use the Sigma. So does a very good architectural photographer I have seen post many images from it on another site.
The plusses for the Sigma are its exceptionally low distortion and Chromatic aberration. Distortion is significantly lower thant the Nikon 12-24, and is more benign. Also it covers full frame making it a "true" 12mm lens at its widest.
I have to use the Sigma as I shoot with a Kodak full-frame dslr.
Which lens is better for you may therefore depend upon what you shoot. For tripod mounted architectural work, or if you may want to use a full frame camera, use the Sigma. For other work, and for crop factor dslrs, then I suspect the Tokina would be good.

Quentin : Thank you for your very valuable information.I'll use it with a D70 or a Canon version of the Tokina with my 20D.But I already have the 17-40 F4L(Ok it's not a ture wide angle lens on a 1.6 cropping factor body) for my Canon and bealive I'll but it for my Nikon.I'll use it mostly for landscapes.I've used the Sigma and the Nikon only in the camera shop.We test them in the store with a limited time and the Nikon version looks better than the Sigma version but as i said it's only a little test (Not even a real test) .

I'll bring this back to the top-- I shoot very little wide angle so I'm seriously thinking about the Tokina over the Nikon, but I'd like to read a review or hear some personal experience first. Anyone use this yet

What about focus speeds between the Tokina, Sigma, Nikkor? I've been a huge fan of AF-S and the Silent-Wave Motor, and it looks like the Sigma has HSM (though I'm not sure how fast it is compared to the Nikkor). Anyone had much experience with other lenses in Tokina's AT-X series, and can weigh in on focus speeds?
Yes, but the interest in the Tokina comes for several reasons:
1. The lens is half(!) the price of the Nikon.
2. The specs (except for lack of AF-S) are nearly spec for spec identical to the Nikon. Size, weight, number of elements, closest focus (and max magnification) as well as maximum f stop are the same. Incidentally, AF-S is not really an issue on this short a focal length lens. So much depth of field even at 24 mm anyway. Not much element travel needed.
3. Tokina AT-X lenses have a pretty good reputation.
4. Nikon had the first DX lens. It's quite good, but it's very possible that Tokina was able to improve on Nikon's early effort.
All that said, let's wait for a review!!! I'm still undecided whether I want to get another DX lens at all (have the 18-70), or if I'd rather do a full frame (i.e. Sigma).

I can really, really vouch for the Sigma, but its only draw back is screwin filters, it work ok with handheld cokin filters sheets over the front otherwise it is rarely off my X
