Wonder if the new FTZ will be out soon? Hate to have to buy the old one then the new one!

I remembered seeing something about a problem they were having with the FTZ. So I did a little digging for FTZ2 information and this explains it:

https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/65497441

What they call the "beloved hump" has been moved from 6 o'clock (FTZ) to 12 o'clock (FTZ 2).

Below, is the content of the above link .......

"Many creators told us that the foot of the original FTZ was interfering with the
operation of gripped cameras when they are held in the vertical position - we also listened to the particular needs of our customers in the Southern Hemisphere who needed to attach their FTZ to a tripod upside down. We believe we found an elegant solution that addresses both problems at once", said Judy Bayonnette, Senior Executive Vice President of Engineering, Nikon Inc.

"The Mount Adapter FTZ II retains all the capabilities of the original FTZ, including the beloved 'hump' that houses the complex actuators responsible for setting the aperture of legacy Nikkor lenses. The only difference is that, instead of being positioned at 6 o'clock, the foot of the adapter is now in the 12 o'clock position."

"It was a complex engineering problem to solve, but we finaly realized that all we needed to solve this problem was a new orientation of the bayonet of the adapter. We think the customers will appreciate the new position of the 1/4" tripod hole as it provides an attachment point for many accessories, such as monitors and microphones - it also offers a unique way to mount the camera to a tripod in a 'vertically flipped' position, which is what we believe an industry first. Access to the battery compartment is also greatly enhanced thanks to this innovation".

Pricing and availability

The Mount Adapater FTZ II will be available starting later this fall (US) for a suggested retail price (SRP) of $299.95. For more information about the latest Nikon products, please visit nikonusa.com

The Z7 or Z7 II are not flagships, they are mid range cameras. The Z9 isn't replacing them so they shouldn't drop much at all because of the Z9 launch. The Z9 has nothing to do with that.

Yes, basically the same adapter in different housing pretty much. Too bad,
I was hoping for an adapter that would support AF-D lens but oh well..... may be one of these days, 3rd party might want to
take a stab. I really want to use 135/2 DC with AF

it is of course an open question, but what is true, is that if someone asks what is the best Nikon mirrorless, right now they say z7 II, in a few weeks they would say Z9, so there is a replacement effect even if you dont want to call it flagship.

Also notice, in the DSLR market, the D6 imposes a trade-off over the D850, resolution over speed/focus system/low light performance.... with the Z9 there would be no trade off over the Z7 II, with the Z9, you get to keep the resolution of the Z7 II... so I would expect even a larger migration Z7 II to Z9, than what we always had D850 toward D5/D6. just my two cents.

Yeah, sorry about that.

And I just realized that if one shoots handheld, there should be no difference. I do shoot offhand most of the time, and I don't think I want that hump blocking my vision along the top of the barrel.

If no mistakes in conversions, the Z9 with ZTF and 500PF will weigh *less* than my D850 with grip/batteries and 500PF:

D850 with battery ...................... 1008 grams
D850 grip .................................... 280 grams
EN-EL 18B battery ...................... 201grams
500PF ......................................... 1460 grams
_________
2949 grams or 6.5 pounds

Z9 ................................................ 1020 grams
FTZ adapter ................................. 135 grams
500PF .......................................... 1460 grams
_________

I could not help but noticed, the combined weight D850 plus 500PF is 500 grams less than my Sigma 120-300 F/2.8 weights by itself. https://imgur.com/a/3fQSibd ... no wonder I end up tired after a day of shooting with D850.

Leave it to the camera World to try and sell a cumbersome problem, and equally cumbersome solution as new feature.

And they say Nikon doesn't innovate....

One think though, if you believe that a picture that was in leaked video showed what the new adapter looks like, I don't recall seeing a hump in the 12 o'clock position ( or in another video, I started to get confused which video accidentally showed what
feature !!!! )
If anything, it just looked like FTZ adapter without a hump period.
The hump on original FTZ adapter bothered me a few times with L-grip, plates etc but probably
not enough for me to spend another $300 just to remove the hump

“This should take care of all the idle speculation about this new FTZ adapter around here, ha ha. And I hope people still have a solid sense of humor”

Yeah I was thinking, you know how we put the hood screw at the top and use it to help with aligning with the target. Well, now we can mount a custom crosshairs in the 1/4" tripod hole and really get to town!

I'm sure there's already some 3D printer lover working up a design.

It looks like Arbitrage was correct in his suggestion that the focus boxes in the last teaser video maybe were not actual screen captures, but were added it post to make them look smoother and more locked on.

Those of you who attacked him with such vitriol for allegedly bashing Nikon owe him an apology. In this latest video from your favorite YouTuber Jared Polin he says that Nikon confirmed to him that this is actually the case. It should also be noted that as Arbitrage also said, Nikon is not the only company to do this. Sony has also done it.

Watch starting just after minute 5 in this video to hear wat was said.
