I have been enjoying myself so much now that I can finally have people back in my studio. I shot these kiddos when we first moved to town, two years ago, and they are so much bigger! I think my work has improved a lot since then, too.
I will say that shooting three kids together is hard work! I barely shoot my own three because I end up a completely sweaty and frazzled mess by the end.
I'm still looking for that sweet spot with my skin retouching and hopefully am almost there! I threw in a before/after so you can see what I start out with SOOC.
Dawn, you continue to hone your style. You have what it takes to become a great -- technique, processing skill, kiddos, vision, studio space, and outfits. to paraphrase the Joker, "where does she get those marvelous toys!"
"I'm still looking for that sweet spot with my skin retouching"
Welcome to the club! To me it's a game of "Wack-a-mole" because skin comes in an infinite number of varieties. They all have their own requirements. However, at the end of my post processing, it the skin looks real it's counted it as a win. If it looks like a doll face or plastic skin, I go back and start again.
Not being a pro people photog, I can only offer my impression as a viewer, but I just plain love these! What sets these apart for me are the expressions on the kids faces. Happiness can be infectious in that they brought a smile to my face!
Dawn, some great work here. Really like these. The B&W is fantastic. Love the conversion. Did you use a plugin (or can you share what you did with the conversion) ?
Thank you for your kind words guys! Always trying to do better and it’s lovely to read some encouragement from peers.
I hand edited the conversion exactly like I would a color shot - didn’t know it would be black and white til the very end! I use camera raw to convert it manually with edits to highlights/shadows/contrast.
Dawn, very impressive images and those kids are so adorable. You captured their expression really well, the lighting, poses and edit are just superb. Absolutely EMV!

I love these! The skin tone looks great! And the childrens' expressions come through so nicely. Client should be enlarging and framing each one of these!
