My affinity for 35mm has waned and I’ve done a couple trips with on 24mm. I’m tempted by the 50 in the state occasion where the context doesn’t matter, which is never, but it’s still tempting
How is Sigma 35mm f1.4 vs Sony 35mm f1.4 GM? I am not 50mm person but having f1.2 lens which can focus well is enticing to me. I wish it was longer like 65mm or so.
I can't afford the 50 GM at the moment at over $3K in Australia, but I much prefer a 50mm to a 35mm if I have to choose. One thing I like about the 35 GM is the 0.26x max magnification, would love a 50mm or 85mm to have some decent close focus. Why is it a 135mm f/1.8 can get in nice and close and yet most 85mm are pathetic in this regard?.
Size and weight don't fuss me for the 50GM. 35GM is $1200+ cheaper in Australia so it may be an earlier purchase. Currently using an adapted Tamron 35 f/1.8 which actually does a crazy 0.4x, so in no rush for either. My other very tempting option for 50mm is the Voigtlander 50 f/2 APO.
The final option is to assume Sigma will release a new 50 f/1.4 DG DN at some point which will be half the price of the GM and hold off altogether.

Is overkill more a talent restriction for some or is it a money restriction. I see that comment often around here. Or is it your not good enough for a expensive lens or you really don’t care
For as long as I have been shooting in my capacity I’m not sure I ever said that.
Can folks explain that as I’m curious. If this is a hobby than I would think or at least I would strive for the best I can afford
I’m a Pro so I may not the hobbyist mindset but golf is my hobby and I have the best clubs I can buy
Just interesting. Please no one take any offense . Was not meant to be ...Show more →
I can't speak for others, but to me, it's a little bit of both, Guy. I have had plenty of 35's and currently use the 35 APO, so spending a substantial amount of money on the 35 GM is out of question. For AF work/family portraits, I'm still using the good old 55 1.8.
As for the skill overkill part, I found that I'd rarely use the 35 ZA wide open, when I had it back in the days (of course, there were no native f1.8 options back then). In most cases, I either used it at around f2 or then stopped down further. So, the f1.4 part was kinda wasted on me. I suppose, I'm not the only one who doesn't need the f1.4 aperture, but can live with a f1.8 or f2 prime (hence, I suppose, the popularity of the Sigma 35i). In retrospect, I think the AF 35mm prime that I've liked the most thus far, is not a native e-mount prime, but rather that good ol 35 2 Sonnar sitting in front of the RX1 series' cams.
The combo of the 24 GM & 50 GM work better for me for what I shoot with wide-ish primes (landscapes, family, portraits, low-light) then a 35 GM would, and I can't justify having all 3. But- if the 35 length is what you want/need it sounds like your search is done for as long as you're shooting Sony.

35 vs 50 when moved in trying to get the same framing. Both wide open, 34 f1.4, 50 f1.2.
nice. I should try to play with my Sigma 40mm f1.4. I bought it, put for sale as I bought a1 but since no one is interested so far, I might as well use it.

After a year and a half I much more prefer using the 35GM.
Anyone else come to the conclusion of selling one because of the lack of use, need or purchase of a different 50 or 35?
I find both of these lenses to be amazing in terms of performance. I use them both fairly equally, so I expect they will be in my kit for some time.
I also shoot the Sigma 35mm f1.2. If Sony released a GM 35mm f1.2 (smaller and lighter than the Sigma), I would consider giving-up my GM 35mm f1.4; otherwise, I expect to own it for a long time.
Both can be utilized on wedding day but I’ve done plenty without a 50. But I’ve often toyed with the idea of 24/50 indoors and 35/85 outdoors (and 85 in bigger rooms), but haven’t gotten a 50 yet. I do have a prime preference over zooms so that 50 may be on deck.
I carry two bodies and usually have both GM lenses on. 35GM on an A7IV and 50GM on an A7RIII. The 35GM is fast and wide, and the 50GM's rendering is just so so good. I can't imagine a better 35 and 50 combo.
On the two ends, I also have a Batis 85 and a 20 1.8G. Both great lenses, but they don't get nearly as much use. The two GMs can cover most things I shoot.
