I’m excited to report that the freezing issue seem to be fixed with the FW update. Shot 3k photos yesterday and no lockup. Also the AF seems slightly snappier.

I don’t have that lens, but I have the EVF lockout issue, as well as periodic lockups that require pulling the battery to fix.

Wow I can't believe it took them that long to get that FW out. I and others have been confused for months if Sony was bringing a new FW as indicated by many footnotes on A1 documents OR if those footnotes were in reference to the 2017 FW.

Good to see they actually did the FW but why didn't they have it ready when the A1 shipped? Poor management.

I agree and really not sure. If I had to guess it would either be: 1) they didn’t want to delay the A1 release or 2) they knew about the issue but didn’t think it was as as big of an issue.

Really just glad it’s fixed.

They should have delayed the A1 release since for me I have little confidence in Sony right now and will not spend a dime on any Sony gear until the all clear is given. Just too many issues at the moment for me. For $6.5K I expect little or no issues with EVF blackout and IBIS problems. Heck this body is nearly twice the price of an A7R4 when those uber expensive CFExp Type A card prices and the required card reader are factored into the total price.

We have a Lemon Law here also and it might be about time that these camera manufacturers believe that not handling issues before release has consequences.

It is sad when Sony expert Friedman in a video explains how and where to attach a small piece of tape to solve the EVF blackout issue to a brand new $6.500 camera.

Every new product will have issues. Period.
It's how those issues are handled post-release is what matters imho.

Same as always I'd say, Sony does not have a history of owning up to issues AFAIK...

There is a price for being an early adopter. If you are not comfortable with that price, wait. It's just that simple. It's the same for first generation cars, operating systems, cameras and a whole host of other items. Visit the Canon board and see current issues with the R5. Same story, different brand.

Now that being said, I hope Sony can fix some of these issues with firmware updates but I don't lose sleep over it and the camera is still producing a good revenue stream for me and makes my life in doing so easier.

Good for you. That's great. Congratulations!

Personally, I am tired of being a beta tester for any company.
So, no problem, I wait until they get to fixing those bugs.
Not that I don't have any cameras to use... .

but you'd be o.k. with, say, spending $3.9k for something like the r5, that has had numerous issues with overheating for both stills and video, ibis flutter, misaligned sensors, freezing to the point of requiring motherboard replacements, etc.

spend less money and get far more problems, some of which like overheating are not repairable because it's poor engineering.

Well, it all depends on how you use the camera in the end and how those issues affect you. I think I can still count on the fingers of only one hand the times I was hit by the dreaded EVF blackout, so it's not really an issue for me. However, if it gets significantly worse during full-fleged summer when the Sun will be hitting the sensor hard, I'm going to request a refund as I don't think such an issue is acceptable for this kind of money. It's not even the fact that it's there, but the fact that it's a lot worse compared to previous models...

I always have some real sympathy for an adventurous and intrepid company like Sony's camera/sensor divisions--"to boldly go where no man has gone before" and all that. I am more critical of Canon, who stood pat with very minimal improvements in technology and performance for many years.

Sony, on the other hand, launched mirrorless and have very aggressively introduced new models with complex new features and ground-breaking lens designs. The only problems that I recall with distributed products (there are probably some I don't remember) were two lenses (I think), both of which they fixed with very timely and competent recall and repair campaigns. I literally can't count the number of major new camera bodies and lenses that Sony has introduced in the last 8 years.

They are dealing with very sophisticated, cutting edge electronics, optics, physics, manufacturing, marketing, and distribution in a very demanding and competitive environment. Most of us buy their gear because they do all this better and faster than anyone else. And they have been doing it through earthquakes, tsunami, floods, and a pandemic.

How many rockets have Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos blown apart trying to get one to fly right?

When you are pushing the envelope, there will be some paper cuts, but nothing that is happening with recent Sony products is a serious problem. And whatever it is will get fixed.

The A1 is a truly fabulous camera. Take pictures. Drink wine. Eat dinner.

Fine. Using the A1 now for many weeks, my wife has almost daily jobs to do with it and no issue so far. We don't use it for wildlife, though, and that may be the reason it works as intended. Fantastic so far.

I have been using it for wildlife pretty much exclusively under varied lighting conditions since it was first delivered delivered and yes, outdoors 100% and I haven’t seen any EVF blackout issues.

According to Alex, when I saw him last week, a slight swipe with your finger in front of the EVF sensor will take care of the issue. I cannot say whether his fix takes care of the problem because I have not encountered the issue yet… .

You summarize my thoughts exactly-post-release Sony is doing nothing so far that I am aware of to fix common-to-some owners issues with the A1. Cutting edge should work. Sure many new products don't work 100% for all, but if this camera is your flagship camera it had better work very well. I will get another Sony A something, but not the A1 for now.

That is not completely right, the 70-200GM FW update did exactly that. Not for all of course. I expect other firmware updates for the A1 itself to be issued, too.
Many things are overblown, here, some are indeed annoying (EVF issue) but one can work around it.

Looks like Sony released a firmware update on June 2, 2021 that I am just seeing updated on their website now. Yay.

Version 0.6

Hm, based on my recollection, Sony did update the FW of my lens since I had issues back then doing so using my Mac before they revamped the upgrade process on Mac. I sent that lens in and I could have sworn they did upgrade the FW in addition to checking the performance and cleaning.
