I notice the focus is slow to initialize focus (takes at least 3-5 seconds) when wakeup from sleep. Both when using the MC11 and native 200-600mm. I was shooting a basketball game today, when the camera in sleep mode I pointed the camera to my face and press the shutter to start shooting a basketball player going to the hoop I then missed the dunk because the camera took 3-5 seconds to start focus from sleep (for the green squares to appear). I set pre-AF on which did not help with MC11 and 200-600mm. I am not having this issue with R6. With the R6 in sleep mode the AF points appear as soon as I point the camera to my face and press the shutter. What am I doing wrong?
It has been some 2 years after I sold my A9 but I don’t recall that it would take 5 seconds to be ready when the camera was turned on. And it would take even faster from sleep. The A9 II for sure would be almost immediately ready for action from sleep. The same goes for the A1.
One nice workaround on my A7riv was to add "display off" to the display button and leave the evf sensored. That way I can turn off both the LCD and EVF while keeping the camera fully running and it's ready as soon as I lift the evf to my eye. The battery still lasts a couple hours in this mode. I think I found this setting in Mark Smiths wildlife setup guide.
3-5 seconds is too long. It is shorter than that, but the A9 is not the quickest to restart/wake-up. It depends, too on all the different settings you enabled, e.g. DRO, shading correction, CA correcion, Airplane/Non-Airplane mode, pre-AF, etc. etc. I only use the minimum possible. Nevertheless, easy to work around if one knows it.

I cannot leave the camera on all game chewing away my battery life.
The A9II is. The A1 is much faster. But I still prefer to leave the A1 on all the time and carry a spare battery. With airplane mode switched on etc. and using EVF only and electronic shutter, each battery lasts me about three and half hours. I'm thinking about buying another spare.
it helps to start hitting the wake-up shutter button right when you know you want to shoot, before the camera is fully up to your face, but it shouldn't be taking 5 seconds to wake up, i haven't seen that with my a9.
pre-af is full-time af-c without having to press any buttons, it serves little purpose in most situations, and it uses a lot of battery power.
if you are using canon glass with the mc-11 it's not going to be a native e-mount lens experience, on the a9 for instance you are limited to 10fps among other things.
for the best af results in all situations, shoot with the lens wide open.

Can't speak to the A92 (although I've heard it's little better than the A9 in this regard), but the A1 is noticeably faster to wake and focus, and more responsive in general. It's still not instant, but instead of 3+ seconds I experienced with my A9 it's usually less than a second with my A1 to wake and focus.
Since the response from power up is just about the same as from sleep, you could change it to never sleep and when the action is slow slide the power switch off.
I do this often when hiking and have gotten used to turning it on while lifting the camera, so that it is ready by the time the evf is up to my eye.

This.
By the time the camera is up to your eye, you should be basically able to start AF almost immediately.

It doesn't look like you're doing anything wrong. I've always found last-gen Sony cameras to be slow to wake up versus the competition. I've read that this lag has been significantly reduced with their newer BIONZ XR based cameras.
