Other idea. My needs and shooting style have evolved. I'm back to using EVF and wanted more reach, within a certain budget. I knew the upcoming Sony a7V would hit the mark but it will be close to 3K euros here, so more than I want to spend. I found a good deal on a Nikon Z6 III + 24-120/4, so I ended up getting that to stay within the budget I had set. I'm sure I'll be back on Sony when the circumstances change, and then I'll get a 24-50/2.8 again. But yes, I like it for its convenience; it is certainly not the best-performing lens I've ever used at any focal length.

Ah, yes, it would be interesting to try the Z6 iii. I've heard good things about it. Heavy combo but you get some convenient reach and a competent camera also good for video (if interesting).
So, a good price and a good camera. Congrats!

I had to buy the 40G back after selling it last spring. 40G is not very glamorous, and as discussed it does not zoom. I have shot so much with primes recently, that I dot really care. Both primes and zooms have their pros and cons.
A zoom would be a nice pair for this lens. I have 24-70GM II but it is a little large. I am contemplating between 24-50G and 20-70G...

I bought the 40 again after selling it in the spring too! I have both the 24-50 and the 20-70 and it pairs well with either one for traveling. I also pair it with a 16-25mm. I'll try to hang on to this 40 so I won't have to buy it again!

There has been some talk about 40mm lenses lately. The 40G is still with me. I wouldn't consider it worth the price when comparing to some new lenses. For example the TTArtisan 40/2 (which also is made in China) is faster, good in its own way and can be bought for a third or even a forth of the price of the 40G (depending on where you live).
Here is a 40G image taken recently:
A1, 1/500, ƒ4, Exp.comp. +0.7, aRGB. EDIT: Cropped the image a bit to the right, exchanged to new version.

I like the 50/1.8, nothing fancy with it but has a clean, natural look.
Based on my experience, Sony 55/1.8 might a good lens for you. Get a used one from mpb or other trusted dealer. Not to expensive anymore. In fact I am contemplating of buying one for my light kit.

I had the 2.5/50 G here briefly, possibly to replace my 1.8/50. In my opinion, it had higher resolution, was clearer, and had more neutral color reproduction, the vignetting at wide open aperture was significantly more pronounced than with the 1.8/50 at aperture 2.5.Furthermore, the background blur was more pronounced with the 1.8/50 at the same aperture.
I somehow preferred the rendering of the 1.8/50.While the optical quality is actually worse, the overall impression of the image is somehow more pleasing to my taste. Although that certainly depends a lot on the specific subject matter.
I can't judge how much the rendering of the 2.5/40 G differs from that of the 2.5/50 G, but I would guess that it's closer to that of the 2.5/50 G than to that of the 1.8/50.

I had the Sony 40G but was not a fan of the bokeh.
I don't think anyone is a fan of the bokeh from the 40G. While not being the worst either images sometimes gain from a little help in post with local blurring. It often doesn't need a lot but one should know this before buying a 40G.
See the review at page 1 post #5 and the following posts there and also page 4 post #8.
The bokeh from the Viltrox 50/2 AIR is also not that great (your link), being kind of edgy. That's my personal opinons, and yes, I have the Viltrox and the 40G. For better bokeh in the 40 and 50mm domain one has to seek among bigger and heavier lenses. Maybe I also should try the old Sony 50/1.8?!

Well, it should be cheap being a classic double gaussian construction with no remarkable features at all. Perhaps the slow focusing can be said to be remarkable. Bokeh won't be great either, or frankly, sometimes really bad.
Back when I bought the original Sony A7 I needed lenses for the new system. In reality a search for good lenses to adapt for the camera begun. Later, as I will recall it, I was contemplating the 50/1.8 but having used that kind of lens for so many years since the 70*s I hesitated as I wanted something newish.
Going back to a lens of this type now feels strange. I don't know... it's a little too much like a full circle, I know I'll stop shooting wide open and use f4 and f5.6 a lot again. Well, shooting wide open can perhaps still be done if the subject is centered, resolution doesn't matter and there is nothing important at the edges.
But, I really want my lenses to be more versatile.

To be perfectly honest, I think all this talk about the slow 50mm f/1.8 is just rehashing things people have read or heard a million times. Strangely enough, nobody complains about the AF of the 50mm f/2.0 Air. I have both, and on my A7IV, the Air isn't noticeably faster than the f/1.8. The Sony is simply much louder and sounds more strained as a result. Perhaps that creates the impression of slowness, or maybe the complainers have had bad experiences with older cameras and older software versions of the 50mm f/1.8. Ultimately, I actually prefer the 50mm f/1.8's AF to the Air's. While it sounds a bit strained, in my case, it's definitely stickier in AF-C mode than the Air's.

Yes. In my case I got the idea about AF speed from reviews. It's an old lens so the reviews are old to. OTOH the reviewers had the idea it was slow back then so I guess they compared to something.
My opinion on the image quality is my own - coming from looking at images. To sum it up, I'm not enthusiastic about the 50/1.8.

Yes it does. At one point I was thinking about another lens. I hoped no reader would notice. The third quote above is the one showing my confusion. The first two ones (both posted after the third one btw) aren't that strange, are they?

Because the Air is quite versatile in my eyes, without any real weaknesses, and therefore seems to be exactly what you want, and I'm wondering what you're actually looking for, or what you think you want to find.
