FYI - Adorama is selling the Sigma 45/2.8 DG DN Contemporary for $229 if there is any interest. I bought one at that price just to try. I’ve seen the 40/2.5G for $400 used and I picked one up at that price.

I'm about to take the trip that I wanted a small lens for. Saw this post and realized that I'm late to that party and checked and the sale is over. But after reading reviews, I remembered why it was a non-starter for me. Right now Adorama has 31 copies used. I guess the market for a soft focus bokatastic lens isn't all that strong. No deals on the Sony currently but Black Friday is coming up!

Don't feel bad. I got the sigma 45 at a sale price because of all the attention here. I prefer the Sony 40. The small sigma 90 I really like. I'm keeping the sigma 45. I'll use it enough to see where it will fit in. So inexpensive it doesn't make sense to sell it. If I don't like it, it will be a pretty paperweight... (ok, wide open, it may have uses)

The Sony 40 works with both A7R4 and A7C. Normally though, lives in my A7C bag.

I'm in the same boat (Have the 40,50 and 45mm 2.8 Sigma). Have let them battle it out over the past 6 months (Have had the 50 for about a year).

At this point, I prefer the G's but if you work to the Sigma's strengths it can pump out some serious magic.

That said, the sharpness and contrast of the G's is addictive.

For me it's the opposite. Had the Sony 40, SY 45 and Sigma 45 for about a year and ended up keeping the Sigma.
The Sony is a very good lens (very sharp, lightweight and weathersealed, great for landscapes and outdoor use), but I never liked the bokeh it produced. Plus the anodization of the Sony lens appears quite fragile compared to the Sigma.

Well, the G is on sale now, well $50 off. I have a trade-in so I should be able to get a good price. I just need it as a travel lens and sharpness to me is more important that bokeh. So, off to the store this week.

We’ve talked abought the 40/2.5 G a lot. Anyone have an opinion on the 24/2.8 G from this family? Is it worth buying?

The 24 has similar strengths and weaknesses to the 40. It has pretty heavy barrel distortion--more than the 2/28 and Tamron 24. It has good sharpness across the frame. Backgrounds are fairly busy. Quick, quiet focusing, breathing.

To avoid derailing the 40mm G thread I posted an image made using the 24mm G here 24/40/50/ G lenses thread.

Fun to use in Manual Focus mode. Almost MF lens experience.

Hi,
The lens is focusing by wire and there is no distance scale, nor are there any hard stops. How can that be an almost MF lens experience?
I still have the 40G, it still ia a little darling but that is thanks to the size and other features, not for the MF experience.

I like how this wire works - very predictable and smooth. One finger is enough for comfortable and consistent focusing. Small metal barrel gives similar feeling to MF lenses vs large plastic barrels with rubber rings.
Actually, I might even prefer this experience over analog Cosinas and Zeisses I own.
I don't look at or rely on distance scale as it does not work for critical or good quality focus on hi-res digital sensors. I always put the focus ring in the same position and generally understand approximately how much will be the through.

OK, fair enough. We just have different ideas about the ideal MF ring and/or focusing.

I have four Sony AF lenses. In order from best to worst for manual focusing:
40G
50/1.4GM
PZ16-35G
35/1.4GM

Compared to any of my Leica, Zeiss, Cosina, Takumar and so on they all suck with regards to MF. The 35GM is off the scale bad.

Opinions, they all suck and they are all OK.

Well, we just deal with what we have. Experience and actual feel varies between MF lenses. But I can use this 40G in manual mode full time and would be happy with it - that is what I mean. But I will not be willing to use any of my regular larger AF lenses in MF mode full time as their focus ring is so much bigger.

Been shooting for hours with this lens today. Cannot feel its weight which is great.
Another thing I noticed looking at the images, when I shoot into the crowd there are no eye looking at the camera while shooting something like 35GM I'm getting quite a bunch of eyes cognisant of me taking pictures with viewfinder. This is golden - no one cares about this tiny lens with its opening minisculed by 35 2.6 ZA type hood.

I’m late to the game on this one. Just got one second end forma bargain price. Used it for snapping candid stuff in and around the house. I was looking for replacing my 35 2.8 for slightly more modern one. Couldn’t be happier. It will be coming with me next week to a trip to France. Perfect for using on busy city street and not drawing attention.
