These children live in a tent city in India, which I guess is a type of rural encampment or slum. I have formed a relationship with them over the years. I appreciate the free spirit in their eyes, which comes across in the photos. They are very lovely and friendly, although a little wild.

Thanks, Dan. Well, I never tell anyone to smile when I take a photo of them. These kids in particular had to grow up fast. I won't post the ones that are difficult to look at. These at least looked healthy and had a great spirit about them.

I understand "C5". And I thought about that in my comment! Despite the "harshness" in many parts of our planet, a smile can soften said "harshness"!
The images do provoke thoughts! When they do that, you won!!!

Yes, there is one image I took that breaks my heart. It is a real quandary whether I should be taking these pictures, and what is the nature of exploitation if I post them. I won't post such images online, but they provoke much more than just a bit of sadness. I think our lives are pretty sheltered, and we could never really understand what these kids are going through.
Thanks, Jacques. They were taken with a Helios-40 at about f1.7. Not easy to use this lens almost wide open, but the results I think do justice to the subject matter.
C5 - very nice portraits. That helios has a very appropriate rendering for this work.
It is rare that we in the US see the type poverty you are talking about, and yes, it would be easy to exploit in trying to get a photo with the greatest impact. Good decision!

Yes, good point. I am now shooting at f8 to get more of the background included. However, it doesn't have the same artistic quality as f1.7. Thank you.
