It's definitely challenging, which is partly why I keep going back.
The reality is I'm generally only seeing a shape. Fortunately I walk this trail so often that I can start to pick out silhouettes in the dark that I know aren't dead leaves/moss. Then once I've found one the really challenging part of trying to fine-tune manual focus begins. I probably have 20+ slightly out of focus shots for every 1-shot that I have in focus.
Just the thought of standing there and having a stare down with an owl gin low light gives me goosebumps!
Really a nice balance in your presentation by not bringing out too much of the shadow and letting the eyes dominate the image. Simply put these are excellent and natural looking.
