p.1 #1 · EF 40mm 2.8 STM discontinued

I saw earlier that Canon officially discontinued the 40mm pancake. Probably see more discontinued as time goes by. I shot a bunch with that lens on my 6D and a few on my RP. Good sharpness, light weight and tiny. I would imagine an RF version will come eventually.

So maybe I can sell my copy to a collector for big bucks! That's a great shot of a really ugly chicken...

What a great lens. This is one of my favorite shots from when I had one:

That's a shame. We finally got Canon to make a nice little short stack of pancakes, and they end up being the shortest lived EF releases in Canon history.

I amazed that;
A- The impression I have of their popularity is so far off target. It seems every forum these lenses are praised.
B- Likewise that the "big" 3rd party lens manufacturers aren't offering something like this. One needs to find obscure Chinese brands to get something in 3rd party.

like some other recent " discontinued" EF news, I can only hope this means an RF version is right around the corner. time will tell.

Granted they'll be available used, but I am sorry to hear that. BTW nice shot of the juvenile bird that may have fallen out of the nest

I'm not sure we will get one for RF mount. 40mm isn't really a pancake focal length for a 20mm deep lens mount (it was on 44mm deep EF). It probably wouldn't end up any smaller than the 50mm STM. (And really 50mm STM on EOS R is about the same total depth as 40mm STM on EF camera)

Maybe we can get a 24-28mm pancake, though? I'd definitely take a 28mm f2.8 pancake for RF!

Still got mine and occasionally pop it on my Sony cameras via the MC-11. Fun little lens. I will hold onto it as a collector's item and the occasional use.

I wonder if it's near twin, the EF-s 24 2.8 STM, is next. I didn't use my EF 40 2.8 much, but my EF-s 24 2.8 STM rarely came off my SL1.

Thanks Mike. The bird was looking for the nest, which wasn't that far away. The mother was about 10' away, chirping her head off, so I didn't want to get too close and scare it.

I use them almost always as "lens caps'. Stored with a lens ready to shoot.

+2 - I'd take a 30-35mm f/2.8 pancake in a heartbeat.

I gave mine to my youngest sister- I may have to reclaim it when she returns to the States. Or get a 'new' one, as I'd really like to have this lens on an R6. Something about the wide-open quality, vignetting uncorrected, that I like about the images it produces. Same with the EF-M 22/2, for those that have used that lens as well!

I assume that there is a group of lenses that Canon decided not to product more of when the current stock is depleted. If discontinuation announcements occur when stock nears depletion then there may be some randomness to the announcements with respect to popularity. A popular lens below the threshold to make more might be the first to run out. A real dog everyone hates might be on sale forever as the inventory never depletes.

Like the much maligned EF 50mm f/1.4 with a plethora of 50mm alternatives from Canon, Sigma, and others?

I've purchased four different 50mm lenses from Canon, and haven't sold a single one.

The only one I really didn't like was also the first, the EF 50mm f/1.8 II, which went to a younger sibling. Who still has it.

The EF 50/1.4 USM, 50/1.8 STM, and 50/2.5 CM are all still on the shelf and all still see regular use!

As to being 'much maligned', the 50/1.4 USM deserves it's criticism for barely being f/1.4, not really being USM, being a bit more fragile than other actually USM lenses of similar vintage (85/1.8, 28/1.8 being a few examples), but it's still hard to fault for its price. Even today. Or its size, really. It's only really eclipsed by the f/1.8 STM lens due to that lens' friendliness with mirrorless autofocus systems and especially for video focus pulls, but perhaps surprisingly for some, the old EF 50/1.4 USM actually has pretty decent optics in comparison.

And take that his way: it's one of the lenses I most look forward to adapting to my future R6

Yeah, I seem to have a weakness for the 50mm range too: EF 40 2.8, 50 2.5 CM, 50 1.8 STM and 50 1.2L, all still seeing use, especially the super sharp and well corrected 50 2.5 CM. I used to own the original 50 1.8 (MK I) and the 50 1.4 USM but my copies suffered too much coma wide open, barreling and weren't very reliable at AF.

I picked up a new EF 50/1.4 USM in 2013; it was somewhat unreliable with the 60D I had when I purchased the lens, but on the 6D I bought later that year, it nails focus when I do my part! Since then, I've been regularly surprised both at the accuracy of the lens with the 6D, as well as its 'qualities' at various apertures. I don't think the new RF 50/1.8 STM will outresolve it stop-for-stop either, and as it stands, that's the only lens that's really comparable outside of the EF 50/1.8 STM.

I say that because other options are either quirky (EF 50/1.2L needing to be focused at shooting aperture near wide-open, the old Sigma 50/1.4 HSM being quirky itself) or far larger and more expensive (the Sigma 50/1.4 Art, Canon RF 50/1.2L).

Love the cardinal fledgling shot. Its expression perfectly mirrors your thoughts re: the 40mm pancake.
