I've made it through 1000 shots of actually 3000....man there are some bufflehead in flight sequences with literally 100% tack sharp. Even a sequence where the thing landed straight at me and eventually overfilled the frame the A1 only missed a couple of the really close ones and yet still recovered after just 1 or 2 missed frames.

So far this thing is a hit but I was in very good light today...

The otter ones are stellar!

I really do wish this thread doesn't end up as another pure BIF thread. All respect to bird shooters but avians bore me.

Geoff,

Wonderful images. I'm just setting my A1 up and hope to take it for a spin over the weekend. Thanks for the inspiration!

Then you've got to get an A1 (if you don't already have one) and start filling this with something else

I totally understand you but after all, smaller birds with erratic flight patterns will put A1's AF focus capabilities to the "real" test. Not +6 foot humans that are easier to track and predict their next move

Thanks, I agree, but I've used the same dealer for years and will wait it out. I'll have one soon.

After a few hours shooting with the A1 two things stand out for me: the WB seems much better and panning is easier. This Harlequin is full frame at 840mm. As you know, as they pass you have to pan faster to keep up. When a duck is this close it is near impossible (at least for me) to keep the duck centered, partly due to latency in the viewfinder. Heck, normally I'm happy if it is in the frame at all. ;*) I was shooting 30fps with the viewfinder at 240hz. I'm still not sure if the 240hz helps, but do know it sure doesn't hurt.

How much cropping on these Bufflehead BIF? I am now looking (if any) for my past passable/lucky APS-C Bufflehead BIFs and wanted to benchmark how far behind were my shots . Nice shots.
cheers,
gil

The one's in the second set were shot in crop mode and then cropped some more.

LR says they are 6.7, 9.9,7.8 and 8.2MPs

The female buffy in my first set is only 5.6MP left out of 50

Enough talk...I heard people want "more birds" or was that "more cowbell"?

Regardless...didn't see any cows today so here are some more birds...if you don't like birds go to some other thread or go out and shoot something else and post it here...geez....

I'm happy to enjoy all subject matter that will get posted here eventually...but the best you are going to get from me is an occasional mammal and some frogs and insects

I believe your comment about AF. The otter shots are absolutely stunning. But did some of the bufflehead and sanderling shots have burned whites? It could very well be my monitor (which is an NEC pro monitor and been using for few years). It's not easiest subject on a bright sunny day I know..

This set is definitely better. Sorry if I was rude on comment about first set. Since most WL camera I've used in the past (D2X, D300, D4, D500, 7D II & A9 ) has low DR and everybody was praising A1 in this area I was expecting little bit more
