Well I've shown you guys 50 yards out the backdoor, and the front yard. Here's one 20 feet off the screened porch.
Before retiring and moving 3000 feet higher in elevation I'd seen maybe one Junco a year. Here I see four or five daily.

Some images from yesterday. Had limited time to shoot and it was windy here so not ideal.

For perched birds, ideally I want small or medium focus area where the bird eye AF is working but the AF isn't attempting to find subjects outside the area designated. I may have a setting that's off. What is everyone using for that use case?

Nice set.

I've been using either S Flex Spot or Expand Flex Spot (M Flex Spot would be okay also). I get that onto the bird or bird's head and let Eye-AF activate, then I hold down my AF-ON button that is programmed to Tracking On....that then allows me to recompose as I want. I don't like to start off in a Tracking version of the Flex Spot because if it grabs a twig it won't let go. Therefore I want the more accurate targeting of the non-tracking versions and once it finds the eye I can change to tracking so I don't have to be as precise. If it does start tracking something else I just let off my Tracking On button and reacquire with the non-tracking Flex Spot.

All fantastic, but the Indigo is a dream capture of mine.

Wish I could walk the dog with 600!!!
One problem, well two. No dog (3 cats, I think you met 2 of them at Conowingo), and no 600

Love the ducklings Douglas. The deer/like squirrels...just too many here and at least the deer are
dangerous the way they stand in the middle of the road even in broad daylight.

Gosh everywhere I go these devils!
If it were the old house he'd be dead and on the hawk tower!
Hawk tower is here...20 feet of rusted steel. 4 feet will go underwater beside the dock
but before it goes up I need to weld 'branches' on it.

This shot from the other side yard. Bird 'studios' in each side yard but enough squirrels to work
both of them
AEAF worked on the squirrel's right eye even straight on.

Thanks Robert. I am pleasantly surprised by how hand holdable the 600 GM is. After a while it doesn't feel that much different than the 200-600, except the bulkiness.

Thanks. I'll give that a shot. I started by trying to replicate my R4 settings but that broke down logically as soon as I got to several of the menus where the A1 has no equal on the R4. Then I downloaded Mark Galer's settings but I didn't find some to my liking and didn't get how the ISO stuff was being managed because I prefer to go full M including never using auto-ISO and it seems like he is on full A mode all the time. Now what I have is a mash up of several recommended settings and I don't feel confident in it yet

We'll end up with a lot of them here in the next few weeks. Male's are no problem to find and photograph. Female's are tougher as they tend to stay in the thickets. But I like when these start to arrive because it's the onset of some really good birding for the next month

182 frames and some poor tracking on my part...but the A1 never lets you down

Actually for the latter part of this sequence my eye wasn't even on the EVF properly, I was basically swinging the lens around with my eye half on the edge of the EVF and looking out the side of my eye partially into the EVF....

Over the top Killdeers Geoff.

Wife makes me walk before food. 50 miles of trails in the backyard national forest.
Even though it will be below freezing in the a.m. the wildflowers are surging.

Trash lighting today as we went out looking for a rare to the area White-eyed Vireo (didn't find it). We did find hundreds of swallows swarming around what must have been a huge insect hatching. So impressed with the AF keeping up with these guys speeding around.

I have to say, after a few weeks of use, I think the A1 AF is far superior to the A9II. I quite often use tracking modes too and they work well. The only time the A1 fails is when I mess up. Either by not being pre-focused enough or by letting the subject drift out of the frame. It is an absolute joy to use.
