Juvenile Peregrine Falcon, she was flying towards the sun so I had to crank up the exposure to avoid silhouette .
What AF and tracking speed do you guys use for fast birds in flight ? I was getting water birds in flight ok, Pigeons ok etc but was struggling with the Peregrines today compared to my A9ii , I was getting less in focus shots than I'm used to. Probably just need to alter a few things
Zone , bird eye AF maybe that was throwing things off a little ? most shots including the OOF ones was showing the green box on the head with imaging edge viewer . Tracking on 4 , shutter speed 1/2500
200-600 f6.3 600mm , I tried OS 2 and 3 and then off

Since no one else started one. Sorry for the boring subjects, not sure when I can travel and find something more exotic. Full size images on flickr if someone desperate to pixel peep.
I wondered whether we see rolling shutter distortion in your last photo or whether your horizon was not straight. I thought rolling shutter is effectively corrected in stills (due to fast readout) but not as effectively in video.
I’m talking about the column on the left, not the eagle of course.

A few photos shot at Conowingo Dam in PA on 3/29/2021. The only issue was the EVF frequently blacking out because the sun was behind me.

That “column” is part of an electric power tower and the legs are slanted by design. It’s not rolling shutter.
It turns out that little grebes run at 30 steps per second! I took a long burst of this little guy yesterday at 15 fps and in every shot, the left foot is stretched back!
I took a few shots around the feeder at my office and it was a bit of shock to remind myself how ridiculously sharp the 600 GM is without a TC, since I mostly shoot with the 2x attached for more reach for smaller birds. This is a 12mp crop downsized to 2160x1440 for the web. No sharpening besides a tiny default that LR does for exports.

One of your shots has the right foot back. I guess what happens is that the feet are moving *very* fast as they need to be faster that the speed of flight. Between "steps" there could be a hesitation to give the muscles time to regenerate.

I almost stopped using TCs at all with the A1/600GM. The IQ of the bare lens on the 50MPs is just unreal. I rarely used the bare lens on the A9II.
