p.1 #1 · Sigma 12-24 shot

Hi,
There seems to be a bit of interest in wide angle shots. Here is one of the Catalina channel from Huntington Beach last night. The clouds cooperated, and the rain held off. I belive this is 12mm with my 300D, F11 and less than a second. It is an interesting lens, and was about $300 cheaper than the 10-22. This puppy isn't as sharp as my 17-40, but the look is really unique. I'm torn about the focus on this shot, either sky, or maybe water...each gets its shot. Comments?

Tim,
I'm new to this lens. How do you take a 12mm image and not get the fisheye curve
Beautiful sunset, my only suggestion would have been to put the little dock/derek? in one of the lower corners for compisition....anything but right in the middle. I tried visually cropping some of the left and bottom off and it seemed a little better balanced IMHO. Please tell me more about this lens!!!
Thanks for sharing the image and the lens

As stated, I was torn. I liked the fading light on the water, and it competed (poorly) with the sky. Thanks for looking and commenting.
The lens is rectiliinear and not a fisheye. It does produce some distortion (about 12 degrees especially when shooting in an upward angle). I shot a pic of my garage door, and put a grid on it in PS. There are many reviews in the forum on this site. I like shooting it vertically as well. Tired Rob had a fantastic BW post using one like it about 3 days ago. With your camera's crop factor, it might just give you a fish perspective at the wide end. I have some thoughts of upgrading bodies next year, and I might consider the 1DMark2, which wouldn't take a 10-22 Canon lens. I thought I'd keep my options open.

I've got one of the Sigma 12-24s on it's way to me now! The more shots I see posted with it, the more I can't wait to take that puppy for a ride!!!

Hi Tim, love the wiiiiiiiide view The colors and textures in the sky are to die for. Wonderful capture of the motion of the water and glad you included that much water to emphasize the smallness of the rigs.

Thanks for commenting everyone,
I have been playing around with the lens, and I like it a lot. I found using it in a relative flat plane makes the distant landscape look very true-to-life. If I use it for a ground shot looking up, the trees kind of bend inward. I can fix the perspective in PS (does anyone know of an inexpensive semi-automatic program or plug-in that works for this?), but in any outdoor landscape without a bunch of vertical tree trunks, it is very pleasing. Thanks again for the look and feedback.

New shot
In response to earlier replies, I am posting a different shot of the same scene with the equivalent suggested crop and a couple of surfers added. It is probably a better use of rule of thirds.

Very nice sky! Did you take any framed to emphsize the sky, with less water?

I like my Sigma 12-24 too. It's not super sharp, but the pics sharpen OK in PS.
