One of these days you can come and shoot swallows IF alongside me at a more challenging location than shown in that video and we will finally have the official verdict. A verdict that will go down in history as completely meaningless.
Here is a swallow shot with a measly DSLR....or how about with the much maligned A7RIV/200-600....swallows don't challenge me much but they are a good metric for evaluating different aspects of an AF system.
Also please name me a subject located on the south island you'd like me to get IF and I will get it for you. Common Yellowthroat? Already done. Marsh Wren? Check. Purple finch? Western Tanager? Check, check, check......Show more →
You belong to a different class. I'm leaning more and more 'upgrading' my skill before the camera.

Whats your take on this camera? I missed it if you posted elsewhere?
It is basically what I was hoping and expecting from it.
It has AF like an A9 and even somewhat better with a higher consistency. Although this is hard to compare as the A9 already had such a high level of AF.
But it does A9 AF with 50MPs and that is important to me and being reach limited a lot of the time.
It has all the A9 benefits like fast readout sensor, blackout-free and slideshow-free EVF shooting.
Even more FPS than A9 if needed. I like that I can now shoot at 15FPS which I find an ideal middle ground between 10 and 20/30.
It so far has no issues with the 200-600 lens like my A7RIV did. The only thing I haven't fully tested his how well it does with the 200-600/1.4TC and with the 600/2xTC for moving subjects. Still subjects seem fine.
The IQ is on par with other high MP sensors I've been shooting over the past few years like D850, A7RIV and R5. Cleans up easily in the modern NR software like Topaz DeNoise. I've been shooting it at ISO 3200-6400 without much concern.
What I really like is how the new processor has sped up all the little things like wake from sleep, wake from power on, reviewing images and changing settings while it writes to card is quick and snappy. Also the ability to change focus modes and switch between APS-C and FF while it is buy writing a burst to card is great. Even using a custom button to change a regular AF mode to a Tracking AF mode is instant unlike that same feature on the A9 that always felt laggy. Same thing with using a custom button for Recall Registered AF Area and for Recall Custom Hold.
The EVF is nice and big with higher resolution than the A9II. That hasn't been all that important to me but it is nice.
The best thing is it allows me to sell off all my other cameras as it does everything I need in one camera.
The other day I was playing around photographing a couple of flowers with the 200-600. I use CF and tracking was on. A small fly landed and then started moving around and then flew off. The Alpha 1 started tracking it and stayed locked on until it was gone! lol And it was a small fly!

I don't care for the IQ of the 2X but then maybe it is mine (on the 200-600) but the 1.4 Sony works great, very sharp and tracks without issue.

Yeah on the 200-600 I don't find it worthwhile. Same goes for the 100-400. I only attempt it on the 600GM and even then I have mixed feelings about it. I had been thinking it was an issue with my converter but I recently tried my friend's and results seemed identical.
That is not to say that I can't post up some nice images with the 2xTC on all three of those lenses but I still don't feel there is much benefit compared to cropping a 1.4 shot or even a bare lens shot. Especially if the 2x pushes the ISO up a lot. In full sun and lower ISO even with the 2xTC then images with it are at least equal to a cropped non-TC shot but really not much better. And you certainly get a lower in focus rate with the 2xTC so lately I've been doing a lot more bare lens shooting...even avoiding the 1.4TC more than I used to.

The small Eye-AF square showed up on a tiny fly on a flower for me also. Of course the fly was so tiny that the AF square was covering the entire fly...not the eyes. Not sure what the camera was thinking in that situation??

I haven't seen it yet with the A1 but my A9 LOVED to lock on pinecones. When photographing all the crossbills this year I would ask myself "when did Sony get pinecone AF" . Sometimes I wonder if there is a little AI in there just messing with us

When I shot Nikon it was always microphones. Everytime I photographed someone at a podium the Nikon would grab at least a few frames with the microphone in focus instead of the face.
Because we are testing all aspects of A1 can u guy try something? What happens if you have 'Simultaneous' setting to write to both cards at same time and take one card out? Nikon would still shoot and write to one card. A9 won't even take the picture. This happened to me couple of times. Can someone try?
I'm also curious to know the buffer clearing time when you write to two UHS-II cards (not CFE-A). RAW files to both..

One card with simultaneous won't allow you to take a photo. I agree with this design choice as you can't forget about putting in both cards this way .
I just checked the buffer clearing times with UHS-II cards and here's what I got, around 100 photos (compressed RAW) from the buffer cleared in:
Simult: 26.98s
Slot1(256gb): 19.59s
Slot2(128gb): 19.23s
(test again)
Simult: 26.99s
Slot1(256gb) 19.47s
Slot2(128gb) 19.28s
Though I have to say something glitched with the bigger card and it dropped down to UHS-I speeds for some reason (took about a minute to clear 100 photos in the buffer). Maybe it got too hot, maybe some kind of bug but formatting it didn't help. Only after I swapped the cards (in the slots) the speed of the bigger card was back to normal...

That is a sensible design choice in my opinion.I want it that way.

Yep, both cards are Canvas React Plus.
The values I posted here are based on a stopwatch, so not super accurate. The times I posted in the other thread were actually taken from EXIF.

Thanks a lot for this info. A9 take 2 minutes and 41 seconds to clear the buffer if you have 'simult'. But this is partly because slot two is UHS-I. Hope the 'bug' won't happen again.

I think so too. I had left one of my cards in the card reader couple of times and realized it when I tried to click. One more little thing you might end up missing a shot especially for wildlife.

With loseless you should clear the buffer around 26s, which is acceptable to me in order to gain more quality!

Until CO supports lossless, there is 0 quality in that option for me . Seriously though, I'm very happy with the speed I'm getting with react plus so I'm not considering the faster and a lot more expensive option for now .
I'm a bit worried about that one card slowing down, but that might have actually happened earlier. Maybe I deleted some photos manually from the card on my computer (but then formatting the card should fix it). Anyways, I'll see if it happens again...
