That is with speed Hi+ where the A7R4 drops to 12bit. Sony was quoted somewhere that the A1 doesn't do that. My higher figure would be for 14bit files.

Iirc the a1 drops to 12 bit at 30fps, then back up to 14 bit at 20fps.

Dpreview said otherwise: "The headline figure is that the a1 can shoot its full 50MP resolution at up to 30 fps. Sony says this utilizes full 14-bit readout but is only available in lossy compressed Raw mode: the use of lossless or uncompressed Raw sees the capture rate drop to 20 fps."

I also think I read that the A9II got rid of the A9's drop to 12-bit at 20FPS.

Either way it has no effect on the size of compressed files.

Dave, to make sure I'm reading your sheet correctly. If you shoot with UHSii, compressed raw (like I do with the A9) at 20 FPS one can take approx 123 shots over 6.2 secs before the buffer fills, but at that point it will be another 17.7 secs before the entire buffer gets emptied.

I shoot pro soccer and I'm never on the shutter remotely close to 6.2 secs, more like 2 for an average. So I'm interpreting the above as I most likely will not run into a problem on the field, ie locked up body waiting for a buffer to clear when shooting at 20 fps with UHSii cards in the A1. Maybe correct?

Correct.

If you shoot short bursts of 6.2 sec or less and average less than 5.2 frames/sec you will never fill the buffer.

This all depends on the assumptions in the calculation being correct.
- UHs-II write rate is 260MB/sec
- no slow down of the write rate while the buffer is filling
- file size is 50.3MB
- the buffer size is correct
- something I haven't though about.

I expect the calculations will be pretty close and over the next few days we may get some better data.

Dave

P.S. Also the body should not be "locked up". We are pretty sure other functions do not need to wait for the buffer to clear, and I believe you can continue shooting at 5.2 frames/sec even while the buffer is clearing.

EDIT: Not all UHS-II cards are rated for 299 MB/sec write. This calculation is for the fast UHS-II cards such as the Sony G.

Really the most I'll do is 6 frames in 9 seconds so I'm fine with my current cards but certainly grab the CFE express. Today I have 4 to 64gb Tough cards. For me the last concern I have. If I do a burst it maybe 3 frames. Not the reason I need this cam but nice to have on board

Yeah the bigger deal with the A1 (and A7SIII) is that even if it is writing you can do anything you want, including switching FF/APS-C (which was my main issue on the A7RIV). I also found that trying to chimp your pictures while card writing was useless as it was so slow to go to the next image and zoom in and out. I believe that has also been fixed with the XR processor.

Rumor of Prograde bringing out 3 sizes of CFe-A by end of month at lower prices than current Sony cards. Good news. I hope Delkin follows soon.

Anything would be less expensive than the Sony Tough CFE Type A. And I am sure that Sony will adjust their astronomical price before too long. I have not used any Prograde cards. As long as their reliability is good, I am in.
