SHOW US SOME FLESH!!!

I'm not that good looking . taking a photo of me will result in your camera breaking... that's why I sold my 300D. But no idea on the date of the Mardi Gras... I just happened to hear it on the Nova when they were talking about the Simpsons and their same sex marriage episode on their news. *shrug*

Been out of action due to food poisoning (courtesy of korean restrurant in town - liverpool st). Looks like you guys had fun with the model!! I've only been doing landscape stuff since i started with the 300D. Also did 3 weddings, some as 2nd photographer. Need a flash before i could even think about studio stuff. The flash metering on the 300D is horrible, even with the hack.

I might not be able to make it late for Mardi Gra, will still be able to do something on the afternoon-early evening if u guys are doing something before MG.

Hope you are ok after the food poisoning!! Which Korean restaurant is that? on Liverpool St? Is it hiding behind the Spanish restaurants?

Not sure where the Spanish restaurants are, this korean one is rather new i think. It's upstairs, diagonally opposite to that japanese sushi train restaurant. The raw beef probably was the culprit!

Hope FM won't be upset if we talk about food here on the forum!! (they might disqualify us from the hall of frame!?!)

I had the same problem with the 300D, so I never invested in an external flash unit since my digital conversion. I've been using my Metz flash on manual mode.

I had my friend's 580ex for a week and it's quite impressive on my 20D: high speed syn etc are excellent. The following is an abstract of my email to some friends (incl Smelly) after using 580ex for a week (let's not waste it ):

1. flash exposure is very accurate;
2. powerful, well built,
3. well designed…handsome ...logical ergonomics
4. I like the centre control dial which the 550ex doesn’t have (eg for fill flash, press the centre button and turn the dial to adjust exposure compensation)
Most useful feature which my Metz doesn’t have is the High Speed Synchronisation … the capped speed of the camera is 1/250s, but with HS, I can fire a flash at any speed up to 1/8000s. It’s an excellent feature for portraiture which you need large aperture and sometimes fill-flash for back lit subjects.
5. A lot easier to use than my Metz 54 MZ 3. The instruction manual is about 1/5 the thickness of the Metz manual
6. fast recycle time with NiMH rechargeable batteries …some said rechargables aren’t that great for flash.
7. Near instant start up time like 20D, a lot faster than my Metz with alkaline batteries
8. great pro flash unit (every Canon users should have…hehe)

I need the fast response (ettl v manual) for festival etc, so I ordered one today from a friend for $588 inc GST with Aust warranty. Anyone interested...hehe

I do all flashed shots in manual, i tend to slow the shutter speed down to 1/30 to get enough exposure of the background, but the 17-85 is a bit slow, so never really get bright enough background unless i set a much high ISO. The built in flash never give consistent exposure, even from shot to shot without the scene changing much. This is quite annoying. An external flash is good for sure, but most often we can't carry one round all the time. Maybe i should join the club and get the 20D as well. Wonder whether the 350D would give more consistent flash result with the built-in unit, it does use ETTL-II like the 20D does.

Hi again Richard

I've been pretty happy with 20D's built-in. Some close distance built-in flash shots here:

Thanks for the photos. Very nice. Some of those shots won't be possible with the F/4, so will definitely get the 16-35mm.

Check out this link for my public photo album, i know it's yahoo, but it's free! Very happy to hear any critique. Mostly unprocessed, i know i should add a bit more saturation and contrast to most. There's a shot with the photographer and his girlfreind too! Oh yeah, how do i calibrate the colour system in PS?

I got the L fever.. hahaha.. not really... I need the range and quality... I'm just a picky bastard.

I find using an external flash is so much better than the built in one. I have an old manual National flash I had working on the Sony.. ever since then, I needed one and the 420EX was enough. I might get a 550 and use the 420 as a slave.
