Sydney Life Photography Exhibition & Prize - Call for submissions

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
24 April 2007 – 3 July 2007

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The City of Sydney is proud to present Art & About 2007 from 2 to 21 October. This dynamic event focuses on the visual arts and their integration into the everyday City environment.

A major component of Art & About is Sydney Life, an exhibition of large scale photographic works displayed along the central walkway of Hyde Park North. The exhibition, complemented by the Park, outdoor light and surrounds is a stunning and highly accessible forum for the display of artworks.

Sydney Life aims to exhibit work by emerging, mid career and established photographers, providing public recognition and ongoing career benefits to artists at all stages of their careers.

AMP Capital Investors is proud to join the City of Sydney in sponsoring the Sydney Life Prize, valued at $10,000.

The Sydney Life Prize will be awarded for the most outstanding work in the exhibition, as determined by a distinguished panel of judges: Sandy Edwards (Curator, Sydney Life and Curator, Stills Gallery), Bec Dean (Curator, Australian Centre for Photography) and Christine Morrow (Curator, Museum of Contemporary Art).

The Sydney Life Prize is comprised of $5,000 cash, plus a $5,000 investment in the AMP Capital Sustainable Share Fund. The total prize value is $10,000.

Sydney Life 2007 will be on exhibition in Hyde Park North, 2 - 21 October 2007.

Deadline for Submissions: 5pm Tuesday 3 July.

Hey everyone.

Did anyone go check out the World Press Photo display in the city?
They had the new Mrk III there... looks nice.

I wasn't too impressed with the shots on display though... there were some great shots, but nothing that really blew me away...

Chris.

They had the winning entries on display at canon in Ryde and like you I did not think there was much that was outstanding

I had a look at some of the shots when they were in the Canon building (I work next door to them), and yeah it didn't seem to strike me as "wow".

I get the feeling that for a lot of them, they just took a snap at the right moment, at the right place.

But then, that's pretty much what press photography is... right?

Nice work Spoolin she is certainly photogenic. Love the B&W shots on the thread. I saw the World Press Photos over in Bahrain last weekend. Yes the right place at the right time for most of them. The B&W portrait of Clint Eastwood took my fancy out of all I saw

Hey beautiful people, remember me?

Nice work on the Emma series Spoolin, the B&W are quite well processed - I am never ceased to be amazed at how many dull and flat B&W conversions there are in the world... but my vote fwiw is stick with the colour for Emma - those eyes omg! Considered shooting her with a ring flash?

Now if you'll excuse me, I've got quite a few pages to go check up on...

James.. u and your ring flash... stop making us jealous! But you're right. I don't look into many people's eyes let alone those with green eyes.. super sharp compared with the blurry stuff I produce.

It was a shame as it had misty rain squalls passing over all night which made the sky a bit muddy and when I finally packed up they put on the lazers that shot up into the sky. The lights changed colours and scrolled across the main arches at various times through the night as well.

Chris - the third colour shot of Emma in that thread is my favourite. Stay colour as it reveals the beauty and character of hers! Well done!!

Zab
It was taken to the left of Mrs Mq's chair where the steps come down to the area where they have the big srceen for the summer movies. It is a pano of 3 images. I have now used a less exposed one to blend in more detail around Luna Park for the final image

Thanks for the details, i appreciate it. I wonder how could the water stay wavey? I'd thought 20 sec would flatten the surface out!?
Very nice though, the water is creamy, and the bridge's colours really uplift the whole. The shells look slightly well-done exposed, don't they?

Now after gathering a couple of lenses 28, 50, 100cm, i'm after a good tripod.

Can someone advise me with what to look for really? I know i will have to spend over 200 dollars to get a reasonable one, but i'd like to know the nut n bolts that make a tripod versatile and handy out there.
(I'm using a cheapie one (50 bucks) for a year.)

Here is the final image with a bit more detail in the sails and luna park as well as a straightened horizon.
I use a benro KJ1 ball head on a Giotto tripod, I use this combination with my 70-200 f2.8 with no problems . http://www.feisol.com/english/enconnect-n.htm

I looked at both the benro tripod and feizol but ended up buying the giotto because one of the camera shops in Pitt st had it with $180 off. The benro gear is a straight copy off the gitzo and both it and the feizol get some quite good reviews. I got my ballhead for $215AUD including freight but they have gone up in price now they are more popular. G&V had them for $450
