Zab not sure about what additional lighting you are using but you need some extra lighting there. Also how sharp are your images taken at shorter exposures ie 1000th sec say outside and are you using a tripod becuse the sharpness should not get any worse for longer, darker exposures. If you want a really sharp cheap lens you can not go past the 50mm 1.8 for this sort of work and the flash I am using is a nikon SB 25 from ebay for $115 posted. Dont give up keep trying and asking questions and most important you dont need all the expensive gear.

fwiw I shot my candle image on a tripod with a cable release, using the 50mm f/1.8.
I cheated a little by leaving on a desk lamp at the other side of the room mainly so I didn't trip over in the dark and break my head, but it prob gave me some autofocus advantage

Since i have kitlens only, im badly looking for something new. Yes, i'm going to get a good-old 50mm. However, i rather spend more, and get the f1.4. I did quite a lot of homework on the topic. My best link i've found was this:

Another lens im after is the 10-22 Canon. the best price i got was {aus} $990. I'm in the canon debate, so if all goes right they gonna throw $350 back at me. Canon for Sigma price. Lucky thing.
Funny you should say that Dicky .. I see alot of fast Euro stuff here still with Plates from the EU on them being thrashed soundly. I'll keep an eye out for some plates from Australia. It is a shame to see someones hard work just taken by a lowlife.

Dupain beach snaps draw police attention

THE 1937 photograph of a bronzed sunbather by Max Dupain is the most famous image of Australia's beach culture - but so suspicious have authorities become of cameras on beaches that his photographer son, Rex Dupain, was threatened with arrest while working on a new book about Bondi.
After pulling out his $8000 Hasselblad to snap a couple of backpackers sleeping on the sand, Dupain - one of Australia's most celebrated photographers - found himself surrounded by four police officers who confiscated his camera.
Although it is legal to photograph anyone in a public place, Dupain found himself questioned for 25 minutes by the police.
"Lifeguards and the police are taking the law into their own hands and they regard anyone with a camera as a potential pervert," Dupain said yesterday.
"We sit at home and watch the close-up of people's lives on disturbing television reality shows but someone taking pictures at the beach is seen as a threat. Our days as a free society are completely over."
Dupain started taking shots at Bondi three years ago for his new book, The Colour of Bondi, and wanted to capture the authentic look of the beach by photographing people who were relaxed and unaware they were being snapped. He was questioned by lifeguards and the police on at least half a dozen occasions while working on the project, but said the final confrontation was the most disturbing. "They thought the Hasselblad was some sort of trick camera because they couldn't find a display screen," he said. "They wouldn't believe it wasn't a digital camera."
The photographer said catching people unaware was "how we learn about ourselves".
Dupain approached the local Waverley council for a permit of the type issued to people filming television commercials so he would not be harassed. "They said, 'Sure, it will only cost you $160 an hour'."

I still feel there should be some degree of freedom to take pictures in public. I don't see the difference between taking pics on a beach and one on George St... OK, one place predominately have people in less clothing but if they didn't want to be photographed, they'd sunbake in private or some secluded beach. I just don't see taking pics at Bondi a voyeuristic thing ... legit stuff..
