Anyone here bought camera bodies from the US? Good experience? bad experience?

Yes I brought my 20D from Canada got it when they were really hard to source here and was about $200 cheaper than the street price here at the time. Biggest thing is sorting out the shipping method when I brought mine in the limit before fees and charges by UPS and FEDX etc was $250 by postal service icluding postal couriers was $1000

Can not see on the lastest Aussie customs web site any reference the UPS FEDX $250 limit

I brought my 20D from Amazon in the US. The biggest problem was shipping, they would only ship to the US or one of it's territories. I got around that with a friendly Yank over here. No hassles at all and about 600 Aust Dollars cheaper than if I'd bought it in Aus. Just back from the V8 Supercars in Bahrain photos as soon as I get them sorted.

Did you guys pay GST with them? Also did you guys worry about camera calibrations?

No GST as when I got it back into Aust I just had the Camera no packaging. Not sure what you mean by calibration, but it appears to work fine. Just need to adjust the bio interface mechanism that presses the shutter release, that is an on going process.

Good Luck with your purchase if you go ahead with it.

First of the Photos from Bahrain. It was a great weekend of racing, with support races from the local Luminas ( Commodores ) Radical Kit cars and RX 8s. The drivers and all the pit crews were very approachable and they all loved the facilities.

The thing is that it is cheaper online from B&H etc than it is to walk into a shop in HK where I got all my lenses and flash from....

Any one in the Coff's Harbour area? I am heading to Coffs this Thursday to pick up my camera gear (finally.. ) I will be staying over the weekend and I am looking for some nice shooting locations.

My plans at this stage is to shoot the nearby Dangar Falls near Dorrigo, some seascapes and more waterfalls on the way home near Ebor.

I need to do a lot of shooting over the weekend as I have had an enquiry to do a job the following Tuesday. I should know if they want to book me Thursday or Friday.

Things are looking up as I have only just started to put the word out that I am getting back into my photography and I have 1 wedding booked already and a number of other jobs lined up. Which is a bonus as it will go towards paying for the new gear. What worries me though is is there going to be too much work so I kick thinigs into high gear and let people really know I am in business. Oh well one step at a time.

Not quite in Coff's harbour, (pretty far away in fact) but i've just found two pretty stuffs in Newcastle shouting for exploitation. One is the North-east corner of the city, dunes and the lighttower, and the southern end of Newcastle Beach. I must return later armed up with better lens.

Sorry James, i can't see your pic coz fileserves are banned from the uni, but i will see it next time.

This is the Pic from that "Stylish" candle i've mentioned before. The shot looks too plain to me, but i don't know how to improve it. Perhaps i just need a better lens...

Very nice, pics guys.

Well, I have now jumped into the deep end and I am now the proud owner of a Canon. This is my first Canon and my first dSLR. What an amazing camera! I spent the weekend messing around. Only made one bad mistake over the weekend. I thought I had it set up to capture RAW on the CF and JPEG backups on the SD, I discovered when I got home I have JPEGS on both cards. No great loss, at least I did not make this mistake on a paying job.

I will try to get some pics up over the next few days.

Maybe you don't need to spend any money on a lens yet... (fun as that can be)

I'd shoot it using multiple exposures and blend them together a la HDR

I just whipped up a quick sample:
http://deepdark.net/files/candlehdr.jpg
(not very "Stylish")

I shot this in a dark room on black cloth and lit it with a flashlight. 4seconds @ f/14, ISO100... and the flame is on another layer shot for 0.6sec.

Hope this helps

Certainly did jump into the deep end with a 1D2N. Do you mind telling us where you got it from? I'm itching but trying to resist buying one of those babies.

Funny James you used the same candle I was using when I was doing test shots for my bulb blowing pics. 1/250th, f7.1 flash to the right white card on left about 200mm form bulb. Would imagine if candle was on the top of the bulb it would not have blown out at all. Took about 4-5 images to get the focus spot on (need a laptop to shoot to so I do not need to run inside to the pc).

Zab not sure about what additional lighting you are using but you need some extra lighting there. Also how sharp are your images taken at shorter exposures ie 1000th sec and are you using a tripod becuse the sharpness should not get any worse for longer, darker exposures. If you want a really sharp cheap lens you can not go past the 50mm 1.8 for this sort of work and the flash I am using is a nikon SB 25 from ebay for $115 posted. Dont give up keep trying and asking questions and most important you dont need all the expensive gear.

Bought the camera equipment from Coffs Camera House in Coffs Harbour. The man to talk to is Lance Miller. PM me if you want some contact details for him, you can then drop my name and hopefully it will save us some money in the future.

I bet Lance is still squirming after the encounter he had with my wife. She would not hand over the cheque until he us a gave a better discount.
