p.1 #1 · Hi Sydney

Not sure if this is a good idea, but since Ed Wong did a very successful thread on the January outing, I thought I should give it a go.

I am thinking of compiling a schedule of events or photographic activities which we, FMers in or around Sydney, may use throughout the year.

I will start mine (that's basically what I do every year):

UPDATES ARE HIGHLIGHTED:

AUGUST 2006

50MM CHALLENGE

Thanks Smelly for organising the 50mm challenge. Please find the rules of the challenge as follows:

Lens: 50mm f1.8 cheapy lens (or 50mm 1.4.. it's close enough ) but no attachments like extension tubes (so macro will be hard).
Body: Anything but I know DOP and actual focal length will be different depending on FOV
Aperture / Shutter speed: Any setting
Genre: Anything
Image editting: No cropping. Just the basics editting. Colour, sharpness, contrast, saturation, etc. Basically no drawing
Critical rule: Have fun! Newbies to Pro's are on the same level playing field. There's no prizes so there's nothing to win.. or lose.
Judges: Everyone I guess votes for someone else's work except your own.
Submissions: Each person can submit 3 pictures of any genre.

Due Date: 15 August 2006

Method of submission: email an internet friendly version of your images (max 3) to Smelly. Smelly will start a new thread, everyone on FM can vote!!

Click here to submit your photos

Pls note 640 width (or 640 height) and <200kb would suffice for a web friendly version

Have fun guys!!

This is just a simple list of what's taking up my weekends every year. I didn't (I should) record the exact dates, but friends will just tell me a few weeks in advance of those dates. I will put down those dates this year in preparation for 2006. Irregular sunrises are my favourite also. Best locations so far are Bombo Beach (near Kiama) and Maroubra rock pool. I also like to do sunsets at the harbour every now and then. I also do things like macro at home/backyard, portraits for my wife, nieces, grandmother, friend's daughter... "one lens activity" - eg do everything with my 50 1.8 for two weeks...parties to test my flash skills (use M only for my flash, dont have ETTL for my 20D anyway)...collecting my own images of Sydney and do a portfolio after ten years (just in case I become famous and someone ask me to publish my photos, then I need some photos of my hometown) ... and I hope to do more motorsports this year.

So, please contribute to this unfinished list, or any suggestions on locations for sunrise/set, spring flower, autumn colours, events, do-it-at-home activities (apart from sitting in front of the computer, working on PS) Tell us what you do to satisfy your photographic desire...

Come on, we all need some inspiration!!!!!

p.1 #2 · Hi Sydney

Thx for the list and this good thread Zane... I'm sure to go to most if not all of them. May I also suggest things like motor shows (being in the motor industry) and see if we can get press passes.

For me I'm heading away from landscapes (well, one can never get away from it) and into portrait/photojournalism and some motorsports (when funds allow me). There are numerous motorkhana around Sydney which gives a lot of opportunities to sharpen the skills. I was at Oran Park in Sept doing a shoot with even a 18-55 lens!. I do enjoy taking photos to capture the moment and emotions which I guess is photojournalism so if there are any events that are happening, let me/us know.

I heard on the radio about a fundraiser at Avalon beach next next weekend. It'd be a good thing to cover. Also I've heard there is a promotion for the F1 GP on the harbour bridge with Mark Webber driving his F1 car on the harbour bridge (slowly) but I've heard there's something like last year with him doing burnouts at The Rocks.

Yeah, photojournalism is the area I want to look into. I love to take photos that tell a story. I do that when I travel and even at home. If you ever see a man photographing his wife in Coles supermarket doing her shopping, pls say hello to that man.

Thanks for the info re fundraising and F1. I guess it would be a great opportunity to practise my PJ and candid skills. Let me know also if you are going to any track day or other motorsport events. I also like to do some sport events as well. Things like just a soccer game organised by local clubs would be nice enough to photograph (better if they wear uniform). I will also definitely be interested in shooting models both studio and outdoor...

Good idea about getting a press pass not just for motor shows but for any events. With such a pass, I wouldn't be asked to sit down by an old lady in Darling Harbour last weekend when I was photographing the jetski...Someone suggested you can get a pass from local newspaper publishers if you take good photos of local sports games...my local paper is owned by Fairfax so I dont think they will be interested in me

Any other ideas??

Quick find me a 70-200 f2,8L IS and a 10D!! :-) Need more buffer!!! What do people think of the shops in the city in terms of buying used gear?

The soccer idea is good. A few ovals around where I am for it. Just have to wait till soccer season kicks in again. Cricket is OK but not as "exciting".

I wouldn't get secondhand gears from shops. Check out the PICA website or even get it new from US sites

Great idea Zane!

A couple of things that I can think of now.

* There are always lots of cultural festivals in and around town.
* Fashion Week

Hopefully I'll think up more stuff later...

Smelly, shops in the city will let you test the items have return policies, but whether that's worth the premium they charge is questionable.

Yes! This should be a great thread to follow Zane.

Have no events or dates at the top of my head but things like the Country music Festival in Tamworth (for some maybe), Australia Day festivals, Anzac Day March, etc.

Was in Bondi the other day and was quite impressed with the skateboard/bmx bike ramps there. A couple of photographers were shooting the local talent doing there stuff.

I suppose if we know of an interesting event, we could post it in this thread as it's coming up and maybe a few of us could meet up on the day.

yeah, forgot about Anzac Day. Good idea about those bike ramps. Thanks for that Bill. Tamworth is a place famous for its country music and might be worth visiting

Keep posting, guys!!

There are often brazilian, latin festivals in homebush throughout the year, very colourful and a lot of dancing and motion. Jazz festival in Darling Harbour is good. I imagine great night photography at Luna park too (bring your tripod).

One thing with covering these things. A long lens is a must since most of the action won't be close up.

Andy, or anyone, if we can get dates, we'll pencil them in and have either an informal or "formal" FM shoot out (pun intended) but sounds like we've got a busy schedule of snapping to do.

Ed, I'll keep waiting for now. I think right now, I need more glassware than metal/plastic but yeah, I have my doubts on the value-for-money of used at the shops. I mean how good are the ones on the tradingpost or even PICA site?

Smelly, threr is no way I have the time to go to half of the stuff on the list. I wouldn't mind going to this Mark Webber thing if it happens. I hope it does. You could get great pics of the bridge in the background and some nice panning shots. Yeah we could agree to meet at some of them. I'm all for it!

Zane, is it safe at Maroubra beach in the morning? I have heard so many things about crowds gathered there in the early hours after partying that I am a little hesitant, especially alone. I love early morning seascapes and have done heaps, but am keen to try Maroubra rockpool. Do you go alone?

Speaking of beaches, there's also the Bondi sand sculpures. I think it also happens at Palm Beach, too. Sorry, no dates!

If you want to test lenses, G&V in the city has almost the full range of Canon L's. I went there on wednesday, and they basically let me test whatever I wanted.

btw, I noticed that someone *caugh*Zane*caugh* is selling a 70-200 IS on the PICA site...

Yes thanks Zane. It'll be really good for me if the FM events can be planned way in advance as in my work I usually have to plan a few weeks beforehand when I will or won't work. Some of your suggestions seem very good.

Ed, Zane's already sold the lens... he told me a while back about the lens... might just end up buying one from HK myself sometime in April but I'll pop down to G&V and have a squizzy. If the price is right, then I'll burn another big hole in the credit card.

Oh, add to the list the Australian Rally Championship. First one is in mid April (weekend) in Canberra so I'll be in on that one.might be a tricky one to NOT be able to change lenses to minimise dust getting into the camera.

Well, from what I could see, G&V aren't the cheapest; it's just that the guys there are happy to let you test their rather large collection of lenses.

Photoimaging world in Sydney this year is from May 5 - 7

I know how difficult it is if I ask for dates now, but please update us by posting on this thread when those dates are available to you. Any websites we can check out these festivals

I haven't done any night photography of Luna Park after its reopen. good idea there!
