p.1 #1 · Godox with R and R5/R6 - Current state of play?

I'm currently on the Yongnuo side of things. I have a small army of their pure manual models (YN560III) and a single TTL/HSS capable YN685, along with the two triggers (YN560TX and YN622C TX). I've used this kit on many shoots, I'm very familiar with it, and it just works, every time, and switching to the R and R6 from regular DSLRs hasn't broken anything. I'm considering upgrading all my manual flash to YN685 so that I'll have bit more scope for HSS.

BUT.. I could take this opportunity to flip over to Godox, which seems to be more of a balanced, well thought out system. This decision hinges really on one (for me) big question:

On the R and R5/R6, can I get wireless HSS with *manual* power control, using Godox?

I'd really appreciate feedback from people who have actual experience of this; manuals and spec sheets and promises of f/w updates don't count for much if the kit doesn't actually work in the present.

FWIW, I'd be looking at the Godox TT600 flash and I guess the X1T-C/XPro-C(?), but of course I'm open to other (budget) recommendations.

I don't shoot the TT600, but have shot the AD200/300 Pros/600 Pros with the R5. The only issue I have noticed is that sync speed on the camera is 1/200, but you have to step down to 1/160 because the trigger thinks at 1/200 you're in HSS. Seems like this has happened with other cameras brands and models, but I'm can't remember which ones.

Other than that, I haven't had or noticed any other issues.

Good to hear, but it's the HSS aspect that I'd like to hear about, as that would be mine main reason for switching if it's possible. From what I've seen elsewhere it should be OK on the R, but the R5/6 could be another matter.

I'm also very glad to hear this because I'm in the process of going all-in on Godox with my R6: 2xTT350c's, X1Pro-c, XT1c, even an X1Rc for my 580EXII all on the way

Well I took the plunge and I'm happy to report that yes, HSS does indeed work fine with the Godox XPRO-C (or in my case, the rebadged but otherwise identical Pixapro ST-IV), TT600 strobes and the R6. Very impressed with the solid build of the gear too! I'll get a couple of TT685c strobes to add to the TT600 units and then I can sell off my Yongnuo stuff.

I’ve been shooting many Godox units (AD-360, AD-600, AD-200, AD-300, etc.) using my various Canon 5D’s bodies for the past six or more years and they have been flawless. Now that I have transitioned over to the mirrorless R6, which I love, HSS is an issue and it is unfortunate to have this flaw that requires a work around. This is an issue when shooting in Av mode (my favorite mode for portraiture). I’ve been doing photography for over 40 years and yes I can and will now need to go back to full manual on both units to work around it. I just don’t like fiddling with equipment when doing portraits as I feel it infringes on the flow. How I worked in the past was to have my camera in Av, as I want to control my shallow DOF, and have my flash set to HHS (all the time) so when light changes and shutter speed jumps above 1/200 it’s flawless.

Which transmitter are you using? Are we hopeful that this Av mode HSS issue can be fixed through firmware?

I don’t have a problem with HSS with the Flashpoint R2 roundhead flash, which is identical to the Godox V1.

I am not using the transmitter. I am using it with the MagMod MagBeam flash extender, mounted to the hotshoe.

I have 2 transmitters, both Flashpoint, the R2pro(C) R2proII(C) and both have the same issues.

This failure has been documented in several other threads as well.
The R5 (and R6) will not HSS and TTL properly simultaneously when using the Flashpoint/Godox Pro2 mk2 triggers. The R5 will default automatically to full power 1/1 shots and overexpose when in TTL and faster shutter speeds than 1/250. I have written Godox with no reply as well as Adorama ( they handle the Flashpoint rebrand).
This problem has been obfuscated by many users who simply throw a speedlight in the hotshoe and state they have never had a problem ,especially when they very rarely use flash or strobes.

Making matters worse is the total inability to perform any bracketing functions whatsoever when a trigger is attached..
I even spoke with a Canon ambassador ,who acknowledged my findings and tried to reassure me that the R5 will perform properly with Canon speedlight attached in the shoe, but somehow i don't think that a 60 w/s speedlight mounted on top on the camera would compare to my 1200 w/s pack with a 48" softbox...

This is why you should buy the Flashpoint rebrand- Adorama is much more involved in them

Weaselwagon - Thank you for your comments and for delving into this apparently well before me! Best of luck in reaching out to Godox. If you have a link I'd love to add in my two cents worth too.

I just discovered today that my only solution for using Av with HHS in TTL (like I have for years) is to keep my sync under 1/200 by attaching a variable ND as needed. It appears to be the lesser of the evils as after testing I realized how much of a pain it is to shoot everything in full manual mode.

Won’t firmware updates affect both?

I hope so,but taking my Sony bodies as a example,Godox/Flashpoint has never fixed the well documented TTL exposure inaccuracies in apertures bigger/faster than F 3.5 that are accepted by users for years now as a fact of life.

Best way to attempt to get a FW fix would be to apply pressure to Adorama.
I contacted Shua K, at [email protected] and will follow up again
