I said this before. Its a good option for those who skip a standard zoom in favour of a wide zoom and a fast 50.
Seems to cover exactly the focal lengths that get 90% of the shooting done.
Yep- I'm doing something similar and pairing the 28-60 with a CV 15 & CV 21 3.5 when traveling with landscapes in mind. Tiny lenses with good IQ. I would agree a UWA zoom would also make a lot of sense for a pairing.

John, I just received my infrared (NM830 conversion) A7III today and put on the Sony 28-60 to try it out. The hot spot issue with the lens is pretty bad, big circle right in the center. Maybe I should try a wider aperture to see if it improves.
John, I just tried the Sigma 24-70 for Sony, Tamron 17-28, Tamron 28-200 for Sony, just horrible reflection, not just the hot spot. Without further derailing this thread, I can send you examples after I actually take some pictures with these lenses. The Sony 28-60 ain't as bad in comparison.
Does anyone who owns the 28-60 also have the Sony 24-105? I know they are a totally different from a size perspective, but for landscape I would be curious how they compare in the range they have in common for sharpness, color and contrast.
I would be even more curious how it compares to Sigma 28-70, but I am pretty sure no one can run that test yet.
Hi
I had 24-105 twice and now have 28-60. I have images shot with 24-105 with me, from a Ladakh trip.
My sense is that they are equally good. If anything 28-60 is sharper, difficult to say. At 28 24-105 is very sharp but the small zoom is equally good. Pls take these comments with a grain of salt as these were not tested simultaneously same subject same distance.

I own both, but have not compared them side by side. I wouldn’t hesitate taking the 28-60 over the 24-105 if size was my primary concern. From a sharpness and contrast perspective, I’d say from 28-50mm the 28-60 is probably just as good, if not a tiny bit better. At 60mm the contrast and sharpness fall off a bit and the 24-105 is probably better there.
I have this lens sitting in a box waiting out an A1 arrival, me with no big Sony,or so I thought. Having sold my A7Riv and A9 a couple weeks ago...but just now remembered I have my old A7Rii and A7s haha! Well I think it funny I'm just now remembering them.
One question: does it constitute a problem test it comes without a Lens hood?
If yes, is there a hood one could buy for it? Haven’t found one from Sony...
There is no bayonet for a hood. I am using a 40.5mm to 52mm step-up filter adapter as a hood. I have a 52mm screw-on plastic petal hood that fits that, but I haven't tried that out. Those came together in a kit for the PZ 16-50 OSS which has the same filter size and lack of hood options.
I mostly shoot primes, however I recently picked up the Tamron 70-300mm. Now I'm thinking of acquiring the 17-28mm 2.8 Tamron and instead of going with the Tammy 28-75mm, pick this pancake up instead.
Since most of my primes are in that range, I just need a zoom for the occasional versatility when switching out lenses isn't an option.
It seems Sony did good here. Wish it started at 24mm, but perhaps it wouldn't have been as good or as small.

Question for 28-60 owners: How rough does the motion of the zoom ring feel to you? I got to play with an a7C + kit zoom demo unit for a few minutes at the store today, and the feel of turning the zoom ring was very plastic-on-plastic rough, not like a good dampening but more like just friction. Not quite what I was expecting compared to other zooms I've used.
Anyway, that wouldn't stop me from picking it up as part of the kit, and I'm willing to chalk it up to this just being a demo unit and maybe has been banged around some. But hopefully a new copy is a little smoother?
The 28-60 zoom action is pretty poor. The narrow plastic grip doesn't help. It feels worse than my Sony DT 18-55 SAM II. Meanwhile the older FE 28-70 zoom action is better than the 24-105 G and 24-70 ZA.

Same here, the zoom ring doesn't turn smoothly (and there is sometimes a clicking sound) and the mechanism feels kind of fragile. I guess that's just a result of the ultra-compact and lightweight build of the lens.
But that's just about the only complaint I have about the 28-60mm.
Thanks Fred, somehow I missed this entire thread. So seems the 28-60 may be the closest thing to a small and excellent 28 prime I can get right now. Cheers!

It doesn't feel like it's on ball bearings or anything, but the zoom feel is a total non-issue IMO. It's clearly heavy on plastic, but it doesn't require a huge amount of torque and there are no points in the range where it binds or becomes more stiff or anything like that.
I have both the 28-60 and the 24-105; aside from not going to 24mm, I'm totally happy with the 28-60, the size is compelling and the IQ is comparable for my purposes to the 24-105.
How's everyone feeling about this lens? Just wanted to follow up on this thread and see if the enthusiasm is still there. May still pick it up for a small zoom.
