p.1 #1 · R5/R6 DOF Preview Button - Using It? Comments?

I feel kinda stupid here.... I just realized our R5/R6 has a DOF preview button.... that appears to actually work.

Questions:
1. Is anyone using it? How useful?
2. Can you really see the limits of focus or the hyper-focal point?
3. Or did you just re-program the button?

Reason for question: I was thinking of re-programming this button... still thinking this through..

Situation for DOF use: Flowers, bugs etc.....

I ignored this feature when I acquired the R5 because in DSLRs, I found this feature to be useless given the screen goes darn near black. On the R5, the viewfinder is amplified so I can actually see DOF. Wow. However, I have been using an app on my Android to learn me DOF with my various lenses and situations. In short, I now have a pretty good feel where DOF lies, and just in case, I tend to bracket my shots. I do this to test DOF of course, but there is an art aspect of DOF and sometimes I am not sure what DOF will work.

Anywho, I am not sure this DOF preview is of value to me.... DOF is very important to me shooting flowers and bugs, but my skills are pretty good now. Comments?

BTW, the app I like.. tried a few.. tons out there... is DOF Calculator by cunningdogsoft

Peace

I use it, but not really to check critical focus -- I use it to see the background DOF / bokeh (if any) and gauge how I want the background to look.

Example -- Often I don't want to obliterate background completely but I don't want it sharp either.

I held the DOF button down while closing aperture until I found what I liked here, which happened to be f/2.5

I didn't want f/1.8 but I also didn't want f/4, so the DOF let me dial in really quick the 'level of blur'

Simple example

Personally, never ever used DOF Preview, so I'm delighted that in the latest camera's the button can be configured to do "other things".

For my shooting needs, I don't use DOF button, so I assigned it to "Cropping/aspect ratio" with my R5 so I can quickly change from Full to 1.6x mode.

Don't use it - have mine set to switch between One-Shot and Servo.

I've never used the DOF for anything. The R is the first time and I use to select crop modes.

I never used it on my DSLRs either but the EVF has finally made it useful and I use it quite frequently.

Don't use mine at all. It is rendered obsolete by the peaking app. Now I do use that!

So you're always on a tripod with your phone in hand when taking photos?
