p.1 #1 · Controlling margins on non-borderless with Canon

I print a lot of 16x24 prints for my swimmers. I keep running into problems with the margins.

I know that not all sizes, including 16x24, can't be printed borderless and understand the technical parts of why. However, my problem is that it's not printing the borders evenly and I can't seem to control it in anyway.

Let's say I print out of Print Pro. It shows a right/left margin totaling .65 inches. To even that out, I want to add a margin to the top/bottom of .65 inches. The first problem is that when I input the additional margins, it adds it to the established margin on the right and left too. Is there a way around this?

The second issue is that the margins aren't being printed evenly. It normally is a much smaller margin on the leading edge than the back edge. I've Goggled search it and see where people are having the same complaint but haven't found a workaround or reason. Any ideas on this one?

Bi, I don't know what printing pro is.
I usually print from my Canon DPP and to make things easy I do all the jpeg print file output in inches as opposed to pixels. I print a lot of 16x20 on paper that's 17" wide.
I print from a roll so it's a little different but my file is out-putted from the DPP at 16x20". My printer knows that the paper is 17" wide. I can tell it to print with 1/2" border all around or just to center the image, and the printer just does it and cuts the paper a 1/2" long, so the finished paper is 17x21 after cutting.
All in all I find it easier to work with INCH dimensions rather than pixels, since the papers are in inches. I still have to designate the ppi of the file though.
Not sure that helps?

I do designate the paper size in inches as I had to build a paper profile for 16x24. I printed 3 different 16x24s yesterday and the all printed differently. The first had all the margins off, the second had the back margin off and the third was about as close to perfect as it gets. I measured all the papers before printing and they were 16x24.

I just don't understand the variability from the printer. I would think it should print XxY pictures the same. For the borderless prints, it's fine. But when you use a paper size that isn't supported borderless, it's like the printer doesn't know what to do.

I assume "Print Pro" means "Canon Print Studio Pro".
I also assume you are using the Layout tab.

If you have selected "Fit to Paper Size" and "Centered", PSP keeps the image centered and adjusts the printed image size to center it on the paper. You can adjust either the top/bottom margins or the left/right margins and PSP will adjust the other set of margins to keep the image centered. If you want equal top/bottom and left/right margins you need to provide and image with the correct proportions to allow that on the paper provided. For example, I often print 16x24 on 17x25 paper. That gives a 0.5" border around the prints. If I set a 1" top/bottom border, the print becomes 15X22.5 and the left/right border is (25-22.5)/2=1.25. There is no way to get a 1" border top/bottom and left/right without trimming the paper. That has nothing to do with PSP or the printer, it's geometry.

I get the impression you are trimming your paper to 16x24 and then making 16x24 prints in order to get borderless prints. If you set paper size to 16x24 and load an image file with 3x2 aspect ratio, and set one set of margins to be zero, it will set the other set of margins to zero. IMO that is a bad idea. You will make a mess of your printer platen. You should load paper that is larger than 16x24, print with some margin on all sides, and then trim the prints.

I print using a Canon Pro-1000 and it is remarkably consistent in centering the print on the paper. The borders are very consistent.

Dave,

I have "centered" selected on the layout tab and am importing a 3:2 image format. Only about half the time is it centered. I can trim the edges (and do) to get a more consistent looking border. My issue is the printer isn't consistent in doing this. One print is centered, one is more forward, but that's not what is showing in Print Studio Pro (or LR for that matter). I know it can't be the paper because the paper is 24" - I'm making the 16" cut.

I have considered moving to a larger paper size like a 17x25 (or just printing at 17x22, which can be done borderless).

On my Epson, I would print 16x24 on 17x25 RedRiver and then use the Rotatrim.
