p.1 #1 · Big Oak Josh

"Big Oak" Josh is a friend of mine that I've done multiple photo shoots with over the last 3 years. It took a few shoots for me to finally feel comfortable around him, as he is a very intimidating man standing at 6'5ft tall and as you can see he clearly works out. A lot. In fact, during our second shoot, you may notice the lump in his mouth due to the tobacco that he had in his mouth, which I was too scared to ask him to spit out. As it turns out though, he is a very kind and gentle giant and we became friends after finally getting to know each other. I hope you don't mind that I include shots from each of these shoots in one thread; I felt like it might be a better idea than spamming the forum with separate threads. Also I'd like to add that Josh claimed to be "out of shape" before every one of these photo shoots.

This was our first shoot, lit using natural light and a silver reflector underneath the St. Johns Bridge in Portland Oregon. I was borrowing a Canon 5D MKII (usually I use my original Canon 5D), and used a Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 lens and a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4 lens.

85mm, f/3.5, 1/400th sec, ISO 500.

40mm, f/4.5, 1/125th sec, ISO 500.

This is from our second shoot, lit using natural light and a silver reflector in the Burnt Bridge Creek Nature area in Vancouver Washington. I used the original Canon 5D with a Canon 85mm f/1.8 lens attached, set to f/2.2, 1/160th sec, ISO 250. This is the shoot where I couldn't bring myself to ask him to spit the tobacco out. In my years of shooting portraits I have come to understand that the level of detail we expect for ourselves is usually something our portrait subjects are very unaware of, so I certainly don't blame him for not knowing to spit it out before posing for photos.

This was from our third shoot, which took place in my living room "studio" while I was living in Los Angeles last year. Considering that he is so tall and that I didn't want to spend time extending my backdrop in photoshop, I felt it best to have him sat down instead of standing up. I feel that it was also a nice change to portray him in a hulking manner compared to how he is portrayed in our previous shoots.
Lit using a single Neewer C300 strobe with a 20x28inch softbox attached, a white reflector for some fill light to camera left, and a silver reflector to add catch-lights from below. I used my original Canon 5D with a Canon 50mm f/1.4 lens attached, set to f/11, 1/160th sec, ISO 100.

And this was from our most recent shoot earlier this year, lit with natural light in Oceanside Oregon. I love shooting on the beach because you can get away with not having a reflector and use the sand as a reflector instead. I used my original Canon 5D with a Canon 85mm f/1.8 lens attached, set to f/8, 1/250th sec, ISO 640. I was loosely inspired by Atlas when posing him for this shot.

Nice group of shots. Can't wait to see how they look when he actually gets in shape.
