p.1 #1 · Canon R5 with error 70

So I got this camera less than 10 days ago and already having issues shutting down with an error 70 which I had to remove the battery. I have done some research and can't really tell what seems to be the issue. I have also reformatted the CFexpress card. Could this be the firmware update I did on the R5 and the RF lens? I contacted the AD from I purchased and waiting for the manager to call me back. Have someone had this issue? I had Canon bodies before from DSLR to my recent EOS R and never had this issue.

If this happens regularly, I'd exchange the camera...you should still be in the return window.

This happens one time but it's not a good sign it happened so soon.

Its a communication issue

https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/support/product-advisories/detail/service%20notice%20eos%2070d%20error%2070%20or%20error%2080/!ut/p/z0/lY_BTsMwDIZfpTtwjBwtWtm164Y2aDQBE-pyqULjjUCXdEnoeHwSDSFNEwcu9m_7lz8bBNQgjBz0XgZtjexivRV5wx-X0-WqpNV68zCjxWK2fmb5nNGSwT2IC8PdeEELvnmpOFsx-pSnDWPHS74H0cvwRrTZWahbeUAnPdRoPVG-c0QaRQ7aOes69J78GtLwbLul6gp3dU_E6ffjURQgWmsCfoUEM9Y0Bk8nfG16Z9VnG_wN_VFEqkF76zTGnkc36BYzY0NKEZtFbIbprqiyGM96Sv_47D8b-g-xnU-6oSpGo2_SaxEg/

Even though the site is for a different camera, all error messages are the same for cameras. This could be a hardware issue and would need to be returned to be fixed.

Contact Canon to talk to tech support. They'll either help you or give you the next steps on how to repair it. You're under warranty so you're covered.

p.1 #5 · Canon R5 with error 70

In the month that I’ve had the camera, the error 70 happened to me in the first week. Did a little research and found that some others had the problem with certain CF Express cards. I switched to writing to the SD card first and 1000+ shots taken with no more errors. Guess I’ll go back to writing to the CF card and see if it pops up again. If it does, that ‘may’ be the issue. My CF card is a Pro Grade 128gb.

Thanks, guys for the quick response. So after I spent 15 minutes today with Canon tech support the rep told me the issue is from the main motherboard and I should send for repairs or get a new one from the AD since I recently got this 10 days ago. I contacted the store and I'm getting a new one to replace this week. Please take this update with a grain of salt since I'm not an expert but I want to pass this information to those that experience this on their R5's or R6's.

BTW, is normal for a CF express card to get hot while transferring files to a PC? Currently, I'm using a Sony 128G tough express card. Thinking of maybe return back and get a Sandisk extreme pro CF and start fresh.

I received the Error 70 / remove battery message many times when I first used the Canon iPhone app. The error would throw every time I used the apps to Eye AF.

I think that’s since been fixed.

I've read many people commenting about the heat in the CFE cards. So I think its normal.

"This memory card may become hot after extended use. Use caution when touching it."

It's in the Sony Tough box.

Err 70: Image malfunction
Something related to the data being captured and/or written to the memory card is detected as being problematic in some way… this may not be a simple memory card error, although of course that can’t be ruled out.

Did they say anyone who receives Error 70 should return the camera?

They gave me the option to send it for repairs however, because I’m under the 14 days return policy it would be easier to return for a new one which is the faster option I’m going for.

Error codes 01, 02, 10, 40, 70 and so on are common with Canon DSLR cameras. These appear when there is a problem in your camera's memory card, shutter, lens, or battery, etc. Most of the time, dust in the camera contacts lead to the error. Know the best possible solution to fix it.

Yes, CF Express Cards get hot while writing in the camera and while reading out. Some card readers have a better heat sink and run cooler, you can research that.

Any updates on this? A friend who isn't on FM who has an R5 is experiencing the error 70 after not having any issues for the first 2 months. Thanks!

I've had the same problem with a new R5 and a LexarCF 128gb card.
I've just called the store and been told it's a Canon issue.
I was told disable the Sensor Cleaning option (mine was set to Clean at Pwr off)
Just done it and it seems to have solved my issue. Hope this may help some of you!

My wife has been complaining about getting an error with her R5 and the solution is turning off or pulling the battery. She has a ProGrade 256 GB CFExpress B and SD card.

Reading through the above issues/solutions I decided to pull the 256 GB ProGrade cards and insert Sony Tough 128GB cards that I had. I will report back. If there aren’t any more problems with lock up I will buy her 256 GB Sony Tough cards.

This camera needs to be reliable as we head to Antarctica in November. I had gotten the larger cards to avoid having to change out cards.

Anyone had this experience that hasn’t been listed above? What did you do?

ps….I thought she might be having the problem because of the Canon RF to EF adapter and EF lens. But this happened to me when I had the RF 100-500 lens on it.

I use the Dekins Black and a few Sony cards (all CFe) in R5s without any issues. I have less than 200,000 frames so maybe it takes more time. The Delkin Blacks run cooler than some other cards indicating lower power consumption.
FWIW, I would bring three R bodies for that trip. Maybe 2x R5 and an R7 for example. My first time down there I lost a body early on.

The plan is to bring the R5, R3 and my 1DxIII that hasn’t sold yet. I really like the 1Dx so I won’t shed a tear if i keep it. My wife also has a 7DII that she used all the time before I talked her into the R5. That 7DII has been through the wars and it has performed really well. She has taken it off-road in our Polaris RZR and it has come back extremely dusty. We don’t take the lens off until I have been able to go all over the body with a can of compressed air. She will want to bring it as well. Nice thing is her cameras share the same batteries as do mine.

By the way, I am guessing she has under 3,000 shots on the R5.
