A photo I took that was inspired by late photographer Alonzo Hanagan, better known as Lon of New York. Lon is considered to have created a groundbreaking body of work during the peak of his career in the 1940's and 1950's.
This was shot in all natural lighting, with a white reflector for fill light. The location is in the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon, along the river bank at Rooster Rock State Park during mid September. Smoke from wild fires in California had travelled North to the Portland area, so there was a haze that softened the sunlight, creating very ideal available lighting conditions. You can also see the haze in the background of the image. The sun was positioned behind me, slightly over my left shoulder, and the white reflector was placed on the ground between the model and I, positioned just out of sight at the bottom of the camera frame. The water level is lower in September, causing a large area of the riverbed to be exposed. With a low camera angle you are able to create the illusion of a completely dried out riverbed.
Shot using the original Canon 5D with a Canon 85mm f/1.8 lens attached, set to f/7.1, 1/1000th sec, ISO 640.
