We filmed the East African Safari Rally in 1971 for 32 days in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. We had a mini fleet of light aircraft to leap frog from checkpoint to checkpoint. After the rally we made a working tour of notable game parks. This was 16mm double system sound. There were several cameramen I was the only soundman. I had my Nikon F SLR for off duty shots. The clouds and Sunsets were like nothing I ever saw before or since.

All this for a Sears Tires commercial (OEMed Michelin radials). Their entry won 1st in class and placed very well overall. After the race at one point we were creeping along in a land cruiser and crested a rise after a light shower. The rain had given a sheen to the rocky landscape. I was in the front seat and turned around to my co workers in the back to say “this looks like an Elliot Porter shot” whereupon our native driver said, right on cue, “This is where Mr. Porter had me stop for a photo.”

Gorgeous shots Bob. But damn ... I was about to sell my 100-400G for the Tamron 70-180/2.8 and Sony 200-600 and now you have me rethinking that decision *shakes fist*

I lived in Africa for 5 years (I left over 30 years ago) but Nigeria is not on the safari roadmap and it was very VERY unsafe to go off the main roads or stay out at night when I was there. Though we made a few trips here and there (always paying an armed policeman to ride shotgun).

South Africa and Botswana (daughter went for a 3 weeks safari there last year and we have friends in Cape Town) very high on the To-Do list though. Maybe next year.

You are welcome, sorry to make your life complicated! I sometimes forget about the more challenging areas of Africa, I'm spoiled by the safari places!

Thanks for including the EXIF in your excellent images. I couldn't imagine ISO12800 could end up that good.

Excellent images! Thanks for posting. All stunners but I think my favourite is the one with the silhouette giraffes. Bringing back some memories of a safari I went on in Tanzania previously. Would love to go back one day.

Really excellent set, Bob. My wife and I were scheduled for a Kenya/Tanzania trip in Sept/Oct, but had to cancel. We are rescheduled for Sept/Oct 2021. Fingers crossed that Covid will be sufficiently under control that we will be able to go this time.
