Congratulations to Kane Engelbert for winning Feature Thread of the Week with 7 votes - View Previous Winners

Damn I’ve been gone too long! Been living the Badland areas the past 6 months. Desolate, but quiet. The aerial perspectives are unlimited. Here’s a few.

My favorite part of Utah. A great set of geologic art! Keep up that search for another monolith! :-)

I really dislike drones - the noise is such a distraction in what would be a calm landscape. But when I see shots like these, I feel myself letting go of the dislike...the angles they offer do capture the scenes in such wonderful fashion.

And your shots are such a great illustration of this - stunning shots, truly stunning.

What was the equipment used to capture these? The landscape is incredibly unique.

I never fly close to people or in a way that might disturb their enjoyment of the place. On some occasions, if there's someone in my immediate neighborhood, as a courtesy I inquire with the person if it'll be an issue. 9 out of 10 times, people have been fine with it (especially if you respect their presence). Here in Iceland it is far less of a problem. Much of the country is empty. In the national parks you need a permit (which I always apply for), and now during the pandemic even the iconic spots are devoid of humans. 😎

I am sure many will appreciate your courtesy - I know I would. The day they make quiet drones though... Cos your shots are just amazing.

Rajan,

I envy you. Getting Icelandic icons with the horde of tourists is bliss.

I appreciate the nice comment. Even as drone flyer I’m Aligned with you regards to drones being annoying but I’m also easily annoyed by crowds of tourists and ATVs. I’m just a grumpy old dude that struggles with the impact of social media is having on the environment. So I picked out drone flying as the lesser of all evils..so to speak. It was easy, drones don’t leave any lasting impact on the environment. Btw, I don’t fly around others...however when there’s a ton of people around with others flying then I’ll throw it up if needed. If I’m at a scene where there’s a few people here and there then never will I fly.

I’m heavily invested in flying. I treat Aerial photography much the same as ground photography. I research, and scout virtually all of my work. So I’ve got two drones. I use the Mavic Air 2 for all of my scouting and video. I use the Mavic Pro 2 for all of my still photography. Both drones compliment one another very well for the end result, a good photo.

To run both drones with each using 6 batteries, I’ve got 3 solar panels, two 100 watt, one 60 watt. Three charging stations. A 500 watt, a 240 watt and a 169 watt. My 60 watt panel attaches to my roof top allowing me to charge my stations while driving. I’m constantly charging batteries while out in the field.

Air 2. The good

It’s flys forever far and away. The same transmission as the Mavic 2 Pro.

Half the price of the Mavic 2 Pro

35% smaller than the Mavic 2Pro

Longer battery flight time (about 5minutes)

Batteries are cheap, and charge faster and require less wattage to charge.

Has 4K 60fps, MP2 has 30fps

The bad

Camera sensor is small in size 2/3 of inch and 12pm and struggles in low light. Don’t believe the 48 mp hype, it’s awful in low light.

Fixed 2.8 aperture

Native 3:4 aspect ratio with stills. However video is 2:3.

Mavic 2Pro the good

It’s flys forever far and away.

Has a fantastic 1inch 20mp Hasselblad sensor that surprisingly does very well in low light.

Has a working aperture. F2.8-f11

The big difference between the two is the camera sensor. The files that come from the MP2 are noticeably more advanced and they allow for advanced post processing. The Dynamic Range is light years better than the files from the Air 2. I will say this in defense of the Air 2 files, I’ve gotten more than a few “keepers” from that drone.

^^ totally agree. I have the MP2 which is a lot easier to fly, but with the sensor limitations you mentioned. I also have the Inspire 2 with X5S camera (micro 4'3rds) which is awesome, but harder to fly, not as portable and sounds like an upside down lawnmower.

I also don't fly around people and use it for the unique perspectives.

I guess these are awesome shots! But I can hardly see anything. Why they are so damn small? Post at least 1200 on the longer edge. NO, we won't steal them. I had to magnify them to see anything....

Gregg, u have anything positive to say? I’m short 120 pixels to your Own preference. I Can always count on your condescending comments. 🤩.

I was being sarcastic man. And yes, to me they are too small, and I was being honest. Is that negative?
Also, your images are 800px on a longer edge. Since when 1200 - 800 is 120?
You're short 400px. And, I don't think I've ever commented on your post in the past...
