p.1 #1 · Portraits of Photographers

As the title implies, these are portraits that I took of a group of photographers in Portland OR earlier this year. The light pictured with the four leaf barndoor has so much output that you can feel a decent amount of heat coming from it even if you stand in it's aim from 20 feat away.

All were shot with a Canon 5D (the original 5D) with a Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 lens attached, set to f/5.6, 1/160th sec, ISO 100.1

Very nicely done. My only quibble is with the third photo where the black panel in the background clashes with the subject.

Thank you.
I agree with you. In hindsight I think I should have detached the barn door modifier for that shot.

These are amazing! Where did you get that backdrop from if you don't mind I ask? Can't believe it was from the 5D classic

Thank you. The backdrop is from Oliphant Studios, and it was a rental. https://www.oliphantstudio.com

The 5D is a great camera. Folks get really caught up on having the newest gear and discarding "obsolete" cameras way before the end of their lifespan. The 5D has always been an excellent camera, and is usually my recommendation for anyone who is looking to get into photography, wants something "professional", and doesn't want to spend a lot of money.

Nice Daniel. A Penn inspired series?

I like the first 2 extremes... one with a MedFormat film camera and the next with an entry-level DSLR - lol

Thank you. The inspiration was Annie Leibovitz actually.

For sure. Couldn't tell you which photographer is better though. I'm glad that our craft isn't defined by the money we spend or the level of equipment we use.

Penn's work is exquisite and has had a significant influence on my work. I love his use of deep shadows and simple, effective lighting.
