I guess it would be interesting to see how it performs at F1.4. Does it get rid of the LoCa before F4 etc.
Based on that flickr album it's not bad, heck it's not bad for the money, but the other fast Chinese 50s all seem to be better to me, (Mitakon, TT 50 0.95, TT50 1.4)

Perhaps, but certainly nowhere near APO. The samples are definitely impressive. If they have reasonable quality control (the only 7Artisans lens I've used I had one terrible one and then one OK one in return), it is a steal for $500.

It’s hard to tell from samples if something is APO.

Certainly genuinely apochromatic lenses can and sometimes do have quite a bit of visible LoCA; it depends not just on three frequencies being in focus in the same plane, but on exactly which they are, as there are still deviations outside those three (three out of continuum many!). The point is just that an APO lens might have good LoCA control, because the other frequencies may not deviate much if three are bang on. But they don’t always.

OK you might say “by APO I don’t mean apochromatic, instead I mean the great performance that all the lenses marked APO have”. But there are plenty of lenses marked APO that are no better than this in LoCA control, including a couple from a famous boutique marque.

Here is the $12,495 Leica 50/0.95 MTF for comparison.

PS: The lower frequency line is measured at 40 line pairs/mm

And the upper frequency is 5 lpmm.

To me, this is a great performance given the aperture value, especially so at this price point. PF is almost non existent, and the bokeh fringing is not outrageous. I have been thinking about getting the CV 50 APO (or 50/1.2), and at half the price and 2-stop faster (but almost twice heavier, bigger and less pleasant feel) this one seems like a good alternative if it's great stopping down.

I am yet to see a 7A lens that has high resolution performance at any aperture. OTOH, there are complete duds like the 35/1.4 for Sony FE.

What I posted earlier about replacements for the CV 50/1.2 and the CV APO 50/2 was in jest, regardless of the price.

I wasn’t going to be interested but those samples actually look great. Bokeh balls are large but transitions zones don’t seem too nervous. There’s some fringing around the balls but it’s F1.05 for $500. This lens stands or falls with its flare performance though, as do all these speciality lenses. It’s great to have but useless if you can’t use them when the sun is shining. Is that why they shot the samples at night?

Seems sharper than my Mitakon 0.95 mk2 but I'm not sure it is enough to make me side grade. There is something about the Mitakon OOF that I love (when I manage to nail the focus!) and I'm not sure this has the same magic.

Not terribly interested but it looks nice enough. My questions is why is it called "Photoelectric"??

They sent me shots at f/5.6 and f/8. And the extreme corners are still softish. I still think for they nailed it for the WO performance at 1.05: sharp enough with not too much CA to distract from the overall feel. Need to see more bokeh shots at various distances. I like their 28/1.4 but I just don't like the handling of these 7artisans.

I don't have any so I'm curious to know what is wrong with their handling?

just minor things but they add up: full stop detent, quite uneven spacing between aperture values, inconsistent font across their lenses, the cheap feeling barrel design (not sure why but they feel cheap compared to other MF lenses, even the cheap SLR lenses back in the day). But admittedly, the focus and aperture rings are well dampened, just right IMO. I read some user reports that the lube can seize up if you leave the lens untouched for a long while.

In addition to what Hiep posted, the barrel scratches easily leading to paint loss.

Should we all dump the Cosina 50.1,2 AND the APO Lanthar 50/2 to get this super fast APO?

No, but you have to buy this one too. You don't want to be in a position where you argue against "skilled cats prefer fast APO MF lenses" comments. Go with the flow.

I happen to have a fabulous copy of the “ dream lens “, the Canon 50/0.95. I also have a 9.8cm f/1 Wild Heerbrugg lens, among others. I am pretty well covered.

If they intended to use the APO label for marketing purposes, they're doing a lousy job of it. It's not in the advertised name, nor highlighted in the marketing material, and, even in the video, the label is kept in the bokeh while they're showing the rotation on the front element. Maybe there was a miscommunication between 7A and DJ Optical that created an error on the nameplate and fixing it was more expensive than ignoring/downplaying it. If not, they need to reconsider their marketing strategy.

Maybe they can get some help from the humanists over at Viltrox.

The optical formula seems to be the same as 7artisans APS-C 35mm f0.95

This is no replacement for the 50mm f/2 APO Lanthar (where APO is NOT being abused for marketing).

(yes, I know you were joking!)

This sounds like one for the people who like "character" and "rendering"

Has anyone yet seen this lens in the wild yet?
