I love the optics of this lens but find the haptics less than ideal. Granted, I'm used to Fuji so I already reflexively struggle with the 'correct' configuration of CV and M lenses. The larger Lux with a focus tab is much more intuitive when holding the camera and lens. I realize there is a compromise in handling with the benefits in cost savings and lens size, but I'd love to find a way to improve this one.
I'll let you know what I come up with, please do the same. ...Show more →
The Thumbie thumbrest on my M240 uses some kind of double sided tape. It has been solidly attached to my camera for years, w/o the slightest suggestion that it will move or can be moved! I'm going to see if I can find out what the mfg used.
If you can get a Lenstab - get on their mailing list etc - it is perfect. The tab part is much nicer than the 7A ones as it is of a much harder rubber that flexes less, so the focus feel is improved. I find the 7A tabs too soft, even when they had not yet fallen off!

I've got a bunch of ZM lenses and the focus ring is similar but better on them. I know I'm being picky, but why shouldn't I be when a lens is this expensive and this is such an easy thing to do right? CV nailed it with the 40 1.2, 50 1.0, 35 1.4 v2 etc
The optics and build are great on CV lenses, it's the physical design choices that just seem random to make them stand out in their lineup.
Just dreaming here, but it’d be nice if tabs and sticks (my preference) were standard optional screw-in accessories if the focus ring wasn’t someone’s jam.

I don't know... it was a rather surprising discovery and I'm curious to know this story too.
This is a flood plane at the Walvis Bay Salt mine. I come visit this area about four times a year... either I've been blind or this cross is new but it was my first time seeing or noticing it next to the road. Strange that it's been placed below the water level as this area is regularly under water.
On close inspection, this cross reads 1991 to 2014.
I'll try find out more.

I've been encountering calibration issues which are now amplified by the M10-R's 40MP sensor.
My new copy of the 50/1.4 lux is perfectly calibrated at MFD, 2m and infinity. I appreciate this level of accuracy and tight tolerance which is not easy to do. On the other hand, lens focus calibration has been disappointing with the modern ultra fast f/1.2 Nokton lenses. (35mm, 40mm and 50mm). Calibration is not noticeably off but when shooting at f/1.2, especially at close distance, it's enough to bother me. Surprisingly this not an issue with the 'slower f/1.5' lenses like the Voigt 35/1.7, Voigt 50/1.5 II, 75/1.5 and newer APO lenses.
When comparing RF focusing (with a 1.4x magnifier to increase accuracy) to Visoflex, all the f/1.2 copies I've tried so far show a slight miss-calibration. I've tried numerous copies of the 35mm, 40mm and 50mm f/1.2 M lenses. My theory is that Voigtlander calibrates them for 2m but because of their complex design without FLE, calibration is only 100% accurate at one distance, so not as good at MFD and infinity.
Notwithstanding calibration issues, I consider the CV 50/1.2 in particular a bargain compared to the lux. Their rendering is very similar and pleasant. At infinity, the Nokton actually has better corners at wider apertures and they are very similar at center wide open. Not much difference at f/5.6 for landscapes on the M10-R. The Nokton is only 20g heavier and noticeable shorter (and fatter)....Show more →
I have an M10-R, and noticed this mis-calibration issue at f1.2 with the fast Nokton's as well, but could not figure out what it was, until I read your description, Fred. This confirms what I am seeing. I do notice that it is better when stopping down, to about f2 and above. I have been wondering if the f1.5 lenses like the Voigtlander 50mm f1.5 II resolve ok on the Leica M10-R 40mp sensor or Sony A7RIII/IV. If so I would probably switch over to that lens. In your experience, does the 50mm f1.5 II resolve on higher resolution sensors like the 40mp M10-R or Sony A7R series cameras?

It works perfectly on my M10-R, no issues with resolution or calibration.
Check these pics just posted on the M thread with an M11 and the CV 50 1.5 V2

The Voigt 50/1.5 II copy tested on this review was perfectly calibrated.
I find the Voigtlander 50/1.5 II a great smaller/lighter alternative to the 50/1.2 Nokton. However, its rendering is not as uniform across the field due to pronounced optical vignetting. This translates to bokeh weirdness towards the corners and swirling from the cats-eye bokeh shape off-axis. This together with higher micro-contrast at mid-distance is where the Nokton has the upper hand.
Although there are compromises to make it compact, the Voigtlander 50/1.2 Nokton is one of my favorite lenses. It offers a balanced design with the right compromises, offering high resolution and contrast while still allowing spherical aberration to smooth the overall rendering. It offers smoother rendering compared to the newer CV 50/1 Nokton.
It's possible to find a copy that is perfectly calibrated with the RF but it took me a few tries to make this happen.

IMHO the lens resolves plenty well even on the M11...

finally got my nickel MC version and really happy with it, this will be my primary 50mm lens as it is smaller than my 7A 50mm 1.1 and punchier than my collapsible summicron
have a mini lens taab on its way in case I want a focusing tab

Look for it in the B&S board in the next week.

Watch out for your new V5's focus shift, it peaks at f/4. I noticed it on my M10M @ 200% both at near and far distances in the central area. ReidReviews.com had the same issue with his tested copy. Leica confirmed my lens did not need any servicing. I just avoid f/4 because I don't like using live view.
