Thanks for the offer Scott!
I’ve got a canon regular adaptor in order as well only plan on using the drop in filter when I want to use the polarizer or ND filter. I’m also going to buy an off brand adaptor on Amazon, as I’d prefer to keep adaptors on the lenses. Im currently #70 on the camera stores list and they said that it’s been a few weeks since they got a camera, so who knows how long it’s going to take.
I don’t get how Canon dropped the ball so much on supply. I get there is the COVID impact, but given the current situation, I think they should have focused on getting one camera out and the adaptors, than what trying to release mew products and not be able to have supply. The cinema series, the new M, new lenses and two R bodies is a lot. They’re practically handing over he converter/accessory market to third parties, by first high markups on accessories that give off brands the opportunity, and than by not being to have enough supply to even come close to meeting demand.

Thanks Khurram1 - I already have 2 of the base adapters --- and a canon/cpl drop in adapter coming. The base ones are probably safer than the clear drop in - why add more glass - but then less fussing with adapters - choices, choices... . And the ordered canon nd drop vari will be 1.8stops which should be okay for dawn/dusk. I am tempted by the nd6 x4 breakthrough because non variable x4 must be better than vari and who knows if I will get the canon vari filter in any event before January. Let me know if you every get the R5 and need to borrow an adapter because I will have 3 of them soon [ I am planning for one permanently on my 600 and 1 permanently on my 200-400 when I buy the 100-500 RF]...Show more →

The Canon VND filter causes discoloration even when not at full, as shown here at Iguazu (uncorrected, with a single white balance setting for the whole image). Only serious doctoring with local white balance corrections will fix it. So on one hand having the drop-in filter is awesome for UWA, on the other hand that's particularly when you'd want a solid 10-stop ND (or whatever density) to get minimal discoloration.
BTW, The view & photography (and beef) is much better from the Brazilian side https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-CHh8jQd/0/8feb15de/X3/i-CHh8jQd-X3.jpg

You are right - the sky is doing wonky things (changing color and darkness differently on both sides). That would be hard to fix. Do you know what stop this was at? Does it do this even at nd 3 ish?
I guess I should order a nd3, nd6, and nd10 from breakthrough.

Sorry I do not, and even if there's no way to read the value, you're just twiddling the dial - but yes, if you care about color cast then definitely get some "normal" ND drop ins. I have their screw-on filters because the only lenses I can use with the EF-RF adapter is the 11-24 and the fisheye.

I'm betting that the breakthrough filters will be better than canon for neutrality. Also a wider variety are offered. Variable ND seem to have a common problem yet to be fully worked out.

Hmmm - maybe I should cancel and save $350 by cancelling my canon vari nd. If only there was another drop in filter that could be bought. [I ordered the aurora-aperture 4stop yesterday to try off ebay from aurora aperture - it just goes into the regular non drop in adapter ]

Their own statement somewhere on the website is that it's "marginally" better than the "excellent" Canon. Take it for what it's worth, but to me that's not encouraging.

I believe that statement is related to the polarizer filter, not the variable ND filter that Canon sells.

I am hoping that this Breakthrough Variable ND 2-11 stops won't have the dreaded X-patern; fixing skies is a difficult and time consuming task.
Beyond the wonkiness with the sky in your image, great shot!

Since all variable ND filters that I'm aware of seem to work on the same principle - a linear polarizer and the circular polarize rotating against each other in tandem, it's hard to see how any one would be that much different from another in terms of evenness. Maybe the quality of the polarizing film could affect but I really don't know. I could easily see how the best could be quite a bit sharper than the worse though.

Thank you, but I think just about every aspect of color is wonky in that photo. The water on the right side; the rocks weren't really that color either, and the grass in the lower right is also not very natural looking. There's no other choice when shooting with the 11-24, but otherwise I always use normal, non-variable filters. Heck, now that I got rid of the EF16-35 in favor of the RF15-35 I need to use the front filters no matter what.

I'm betting on the solid NDs from breakthrough not the variable.

I spoke with Breakthrough just the other day about the difference between their VND and their ND filters. The rep that I spoke with recommended the standard ND filters for photography. In my experience I find that I use the 6 stop filter predominantly so that’s what I ordered along with the CP. I’ve been impressed with the quality of the filters that I’ve ordered from them in the past. They have become my favorite filter company, great accessibility as well as warranty on their products.

The problems remains that you cannot buy anything right now except aurora-aperture clip in to normal adapter 4 stop on ebay. It uses schot glass and is reputed to be very good. Just a little awkward to flip back and forth between 2 vs 4 vs 8 vs 10 stop because you have to take it off and swap filters out or have several adapters - one for each stop (3stop/adapter, 6 stop/adapter, 10stop/adapter). [ And they only have 4stop available now]
I want to take pictures now so I ordered the aurora aperture [and canon nd filter and canon adapter with CPL] and am now waiting to see whether Kolari or Breakthrough win the race to have anything available; but Kolari looks better in theory because of gorilla glass instead of schot glass (breakthrough).
And I have canon adapter and cpl; and variable nd filter ordered. I am tired of waiting.
