p.1 #1 · 8x10 Photo of my friend and his family

Here's a photo I made of my friend and his mom and little brother while they were in New York together for the last time.

It was made during the last time they would be together for a couple of months.
That week he left for school in California.
Less than a month later, his mom and little brother packed up their family home in New York and left for Germany.
My friend flew to Germany a few days ago so they are reunited for a few weeks 😊

Lovely, welcome to FM, not that I'm much of a welcome committee!
This is a beautiful environmental portrait even though it does't have much environment in it.
Unlike most of the B&W's I see, this works very well as a B&W though it could have a wee bit more contrast. There is a very Dorothea Lange look and story here. I like the strong camera engagement from the man which really sucks us in, then the strong family tie added by the woman embracing her kids. What matters is sharp, with a shallow enough DoF to isolate the rest of the foreground/bg.
The only nitpicks I have is the blow-out on the man's shoulder and the hands being closer to the camera are too big and distracting. I would crop it just below but keep the entire AK bracelet in it. You have plenty of the pretty busy left side that could be cropped to keep your 4:5 ratio.
Lovely, very nice job!

Very interesting. From your description I was expecting an upbeat photo. But this has a sadness to it, as if they had lost a family member.
But it is an excellent photo full of emotion, just not the emotion I thought it would be.
And the B&W is perfect for it.

John posted while my two fingers were typing.
I agree about the crop, definitely would be better.

Somehow, it sounded like somebody passed away but fortunately, no. I really enjoy that image a lot. The strength of the family bond is showing and you captured and the captivating look of the two brothers. A strong image, for sure!
