So what's the opinion on the Minolta 400/4.5 APO G "High Speed" lens (Alpha mount)?
Looking to use this for long distance landscapes so wide open sharpness across the frame and low flare/ghosting when the sun is in the frame are important. Don't need AF.
I assume this Minolta lens will work with the new adapter - at least for communications?

By reputation the 400 is a stellar performer, but don't forget these lenses were designed for film & PF is pretty noticeable. I have the 600 & it takes a button push in post to correct. The speed of the HS rated camera is quite impressive.

Thanks for posting, but no screw driven lenses...some very modern SSM II lenses...
I was thinking the same thing--I use the LA-EA3 with my 50 ZA SSM and already get all of these capabilities on the a9 including continuous shooting and tracking at 10fps.
Hopefully they'll (not too slowly) add screwdrive compatibility to other cameras!
I would likely pick up another 80-200 HS G--it was my most reliable A-mount lens, plus that compact all-metal build was pretty sweet. Then again, I can imagine that little adapter flying apart trying to drive it! My copy equaled my 200/2.8 in everything but size.
I had nearly a full set of the original AF series and agree with many in this thread as to which ones were great.
I did like the 100/2, very contrasty like the 35/2. Apparently they were a matched set and had different coatings than the 1.4 trio, which were also matched for colour and contrast.
I did try a later 85/1.4 D model, and the colours were more like the 80-200 HS G.

Cool. I have a 400/5.6 ED-AI Nikkor and the 100-400GM, but both of them are f/5.6 . . . Nearly another stop of light would be great if the 400/4.5 APO is excellent from wide open and can communicate electronically with my A7RIII to set the aperture and know the focal length.

Yeah, and classic marketing. And yes please on a realistic report.
Are you ordering an 85/1.4 or 100/2 or anything else?
I decided to start with the 200/2.8 as it seems to be a safe bet. If I like it, I will think about other lenses. Probably not the 85/1.4 since I already love the 85/1.4 GM.

The 100/2 is a pretty special lens with a pretty unique look. I would make it the next choice if you like the performance. Once I got it, I rarely used the 80-200/2.8 HS G.

Thank you. I bought this one and hopefully it will work until the AF adapter ships...
The 80-200mm ƒ2.8 HS arrived today.
I bought the Haoge adapter for the interim as well. Should suffice to do some basic testing with the lens. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the ring for closing the aperture actually has detents, so even though there's no indication of the aperture, at least you can close it a repeatable amount relative to wide open.

Nice contrast and colors. It looks like you focused on the upfront blue jar?
How do you like the lens Mike?
I've purchased the 200/2.8 in anticipating for the adapter since Sony does not offer this prime but I also thought about this zoom and the 100/2. I just wanted to see how AF behaves with the adapter before getting more lenses. I don't mind if AF is not very fast as long as it's accurate.

Yes, typical Minolta colors; part of what I like about some of their old lenses.
Yes, focused on upper lip of blue jar. It's tricky to focus it manually, because the focus ring has a very short throw. Should be a bit easier when the sun comes back. Definitely looking forward to auto-focus (and aperture control).
I loved this lens on my a99ii. The announcement of the LA-EA5 pushed me to try it again on a current camera.

I'm really trusting the LA-EA5 will work great with screw-focus lenses. I just grabbed a Mino 100/2 so my 200/2.8 APO does not feel too lonely.
See, now here's where the problem comes in. I'd like to pick up some of the old Minolta glass I used and loved, but I think I should wait for you to test them extensively. If they test well, that'll cause a run on used Minolta glass...and then I'll have to pick them up at higher prices
Regardless, I think you'll like most things about those lenses, AF excepted. I look forward to the tests.

I am right in the fence with the Mino 80-200 2.8 HS....and 85 ltd 😬

You’re showing much better self-control than me. I am not envious

I can get by with the 100/2. When I owned it and the 80-200 HS G, the 100 was what I always reached for. But then again, my boy is 8 and doing sports... crap.
