It won't work on the a7rIII or anything else UNLESS they have SAM/SSM motors. The only ones that work with the original screw driven lenses are the two models I mentioned above.

The A7RIII was listed as supported on the first page of this thread but I should have done more homework. This site summarized the situation well:

https://briansmith.com/sony-la-ea5-a-mount-lens-adapter/

Surprised Sony did not support the A9II for this adapter with screw mount lenses too. Perhaps there is a hardware limitation?

Update: Just received the 1.4x TELEPLUS MC4 DGX

The good news is that it works with the 135/1.8 ZA + LA-EA5 adapter! It even shows the aperture value and works with auto-IBIS. Focus speed seems just as fast as the lens bare but I have not checked IQ yet. -- that could potentially be the bad news

The camera (A7RIV) tells me the lens is f/2.5 with the adapter + 1.4x. (190/2.5 equiv.)

I'm hoping Kenko will start making mirrorless extenders with the same great compatibility (1.4x's that fit nearly any lens). The Sigma 100-400 would be much more attractive with workable extender solution as an affordable alternative to the GM zoom.

If they do, they may need to improve their optical design. This one is not good at all. I do not recommend it and will not try their 2.0x teleconverter.

Here are a few samples at f/2.5 (with the adapter it's f/3.5). It's better to crop the 135mm image to 200mm than to use this adapter.

LEFT: 135/1.8 + 1.4x
RIGHT: 135/1.8 bare

This was done at f/2.5 because wide open, the 1.4x is low contrast (dreamy)

Yeah, that's not good, and not at all how my Nikon version performs.

Does it do any better with the 200/2.8?

I will try that but I think we have higher expectations now and 61MP is not forgiving.
The adapter was brand new but it could be copy variation as well.

I guess I will just use the 135/1.8 ZA in crop mode (26MP) whenever I need more reach.

Good points all around, but that corner performance makes me feel like there might be something wrong. It looks much more the way you'd expect the old DG design to look, not the DGX.

I think all the teleconverters for the a-mount have always performed about like that, even on 24mp sensors. Dyxum would have a examples.

There is sample variation but the 4 element designs are not great. I think there is just not enough space to make a great generic 1.4X (really more 1.3X) teleconverter. The 7 element 2X (1.9X) optics are much better. Their 3X design is good too.

Kenko seems to have used the same optics for a long time. They do have 5-element 1.4X now that was never available for A-mount.

The DGX chip's aperture and focal length adjustments don't work with SSM II lenses and A77 and later SLTs. The lenses focus fine on them.

I am really hoping Sony updates the compatibility of this adapter, at least to the a7r3/a7iii/a9. My Mino 100/2 is screaming for more use, but the MF is quite tricky, even with good EVFs.

FYI
I received an email alert from B&H yesterday that the Sony has discontinued the A99II.
Food for thought!

The a77 II is also discontinued. It looks like this is the end of the line for the A-mount.

I know this is a very long shot but has anyone used the Minolta or even Sony 50mm 1.4 (not the ZA) cheaper kit-ish lenses with the LA-EA5? Looking for a character (re lots of nice coma wide open) 50mm f1.4 lens which will give me AF. Basically an AF version of my Pentax Super Tak.

I used the Sony 50mm a-mount briefly on an a900 while I was waiting for the LA-EA5. I didn't bond with it, probably because it had those exactly qualities you just described. On the LA-EA5, I'd expect it to focus more accurately, but otherwise act the same.

Here's an album with few shots at ƒ1.4, that show some of the character. Also, two test shots (the kitchen scene) at ƒ1.4 and ƒ2.8 so you can see how it sharpens up. https://flic.kr/s/aHsmTfF8wF

Thanks Mike, how was it stopped down to f5.6-8?

It was respectable by ƒ4 and very good beyond that.

I preferred the Minolta versions, specifically the RS for the rounded aperture blades. The coatings were very different from the Sony ones. It had really nice rendering for people.

That's good data, thank you. I've seen plenty of the regular 50mm Minolta's on ebay and they're cheap but I hadn't paid any attention to the RS. I had been specifically looking for the regular one with the metal body but the rounded aperture blades might seem worth the extra time/cost to find one and the perhaps cheaper build. Do you have any images from the RS?

When using telecoverters (Kenko MC4 1,4) one needs to stop down to f4 and onwards,
the converter lens is so small in diameter that wider apertures on lens will blur
but with f4-5.6.8 I see virtually no decrease in resolution (Samyang 135, Nikon 180/200, older Minolta lenses)
so not helpful to have "fast" tele with MC4 1,4x but otherwise very usable

That makes sense. I get great results out of mine with the Nikon 300/4.
