p.2 #1 · It is here now. Using your Sony camera as webcam

Been waiting for this as I watched the others roll out their Webcam apps. Too bad about starting with Windows only Seems to be the pattern with Canon and Nikon apps too. However, Canon's Webcam app now supports Mac as well. I am sure just a matter of time and we see ImagingEdge Webcam app Mac version too.

Thanks in advance to all the Windows guys that will iron out the Imaging Edge Webcam kinks beforehand

It is hilarious overkill, but you use what you have on the shelf

See, this way I didn't need to buy another camera.

I have my A7R3 set up as a web/zoom meeting camera already on a Mac.

Happy to share the steps if there is interest.

This seems way late. In the early days of the COVID the webcams were hard to find, but they are more available now. Obviously IQ of a real camera is better.

Has anyone used the a7R III on battery and if so, how long does it last? I don't want it to conk out in the middle of a meeting.

Okay...I couldn't wait for the Mac version WTH

Connected to a Windows 10 PC. Easy-Peasy setup. A7rIV + FE 35 F2.8. Quality looks very good even Wow, on this low end, 1080P monitor. F2.8 DoF looks very nice too. I am sure people will notice the small DoF. Now I have to try something at 1.4 !

I connected with Google Meet and Skype video conference, no problem. No microphone on this PC so that's an extra something I have to think about and looks like I need a table top tripod too. Can't wait until I can use this on my 5K iMac.

Any recommendations for a small table top tripod that will support Sony A7rIV plus lens appreciated.

I used this today with my RIV and 24GM and was the prettiest screen in the Zoom call lol.

Camera died after about three and a half hours or so, though. Is there a way to charge while using it?

have you tried using the micro-USB I thought that was possible, otherwise the best option is a dummy battery to USB converter

I'm going to try it at 12mm FL. Should spice up meetings.

The Laowa 9mm full frame lens would be even better.

If you are plugged into a powered USB connection the camera can take power from the USB. You need to make sure "USB Power Supply" is ON (Setup4, 4/7 on the A7R4 and A9). The camera may not be able to source enough power to stay fully charged so it may run out of power after a long session. 3.5 hours is a long time.

If you are using the HDMI output to connect to a video capture card, you can also connect a USB cable to keep the camera charged.

I want to:
- Record from the HDMI output
- Control the camera functions remotely via USB
- Take high resolution/high fps video and transfer to a PC (Windows)

Can this be done with this software and the camera connected to an HDMI recorder and USB to a PC?

You can get 100 ft USB active cables that are really good these days and you can get 200m length over fiber USB too if you want to pay the price.

You can not control the camera using this new app and you cannot use Sony Edge Remote to control the camera while using the app since they can not both run at the same time.

You can do what you want by using an HDMI capture card connected to the camera's HDMI output and your computer's USB. You will need to set up the camera to produce a clean HDMI signal, which is easy to do in the network menus. Once you have the HDMI capture card properly connected and the video feeding your app (e.g. Zoom, GoToMeeting, etc), you can connect the camera USB port to the your computer and connect via Sony Imaging Edge Remote. Remote will allow you to control the camera and change settings, focus, etc. If you set up as described in the comment above, the camera will receive power from the USB port. I use this type of set up frequently and it works well.

If you want to capture high res/high fps video, I think it just depends on the HDMI capture card capabilities. You also need to be sure your camera model will output the mode you want to the HDMI port.

It should charge or at least only trickle down very slowly. Three and a half hours seems pretty good. I’m sure that if you’re in a call that long that you can take a five second recess to swap batteries. You can try to extend the lifespan by turning off the monitor.

I just tried this with my son’s Zoom call with his classmates. Worked fine. I do have a question, as I don’t shoot video. Sony recommends you put this in Auto. I did that. Is there any reason to use a different setting? Also, is the only way to engage AF to enable the live tracking (for me, it’s pushing down the thumb stick, then pressing the center button)? Thanks in advance.

maybe enabling pre-AF in the menus would solve that but will always be on
